All of their goalies are renting a hospital room. All of them. Including their AHL tenders. Elliott, Stolarz, Neuvirth and whatever else they have there are broken.

They're trying to give Carter Hart more time.
Their season is sunk and Elliott and Stolarz are still injured. Neuvrith and McKenna will likelys stay in the NHL and allow them to give Hart more time to develop.

2018/2019 Trade Speculation and Rumors
I love the idea of getting Mark stone but I think the asking price will be too high. Some guys that I think are good fits for what the flames could use are Ferland or Kevin Hayes. Both are versatile options for the flames. Both guys bring size and are good on the cycle game.
Ferland is more physical, has been a force in the playoffs before, and shouldn’t be a disruption in the dressing room. He gives the flames an option on the top line if a circumstance arises where Peters wants to spread out some scoring. He could reunite Ferland with Johnny and Monahan and move Lindholm down to play with backlund and tkachuk if the team starts to struggle.
Hayes can play center or wing so having him would give the flames the option to put him on any of the lines. Plus he has played with Johnny in the past so there’s good potential for him to have chemistry on that top line if need be.
Versatility is the big bonus with players like this. I think going after a player like Simmonds or Stone sounds good but is the riskier move and far more costly. And a guy like Maroon doesn’t bring as much speed and skill as Ferland or Hayes in my opinion.

I just keep coming back to how perfectly Stone would fit on the line with Backlund and Tkachuk.
Dominant possession player. Dominant scorer. Good size, good hands. He would make our offence even more lethal than it is, all while improving our defense. I mean he's a +11 or +12 on the year with Ottawa....

But I don't think Stone is going anywhere but Ottawa. It's a nice though and he'd cost an arm and a leg. Which isn't optimal for the Flames given what they gotta do in the off season.
Stone I think, I predicted it yesterday, will be the sens next Captain.

Entirely possible he is. But we are only a few weeks away from the trade deadline, and he is still set to become a UFA. For a team like Ottawa, you can't let a player like that walk without receiving something, anything, in return.
He'll be moved to a contender at the deadline if he isn't signed. Why not us?

If he becomes available he will be highly sought after.
So the challenges are
- The Flames lack really good pieces to offer up. A late first won't do it. Are you prepared to give up the first + one of the young dmen + something else?
- The likelihood and ability to re-sign him given other financial needs including Tkachuk, a new goalie, and re-signing BSD

Yeah the cost will be 1st, Bennett/Dube, Valimaki/Andersson/Kylington most likely. Pretty much zero chance we can afford him next year unless we are trading out a couple of core pieces to free up cap space.
I agree he would fit the second line like a glove but it would be painful to see him walk in the summer and have lost those assets. Guarantee me a cup then it is worth it but there is never a cup guarantee

Flames won’t be signing Stone with his brother sitting in the stands. If anything they will trade stone to Ottawa for a good return because it will entice the other Stone to re sign in order to play with his brother

Nah.
This is Peter Dorion (Melnyk) we are dealing with here. Normal prices don't apply.
Put Mike Smith in the deal, say you'll take back Ryan, and I bet we walk out of there with their first next year too.
I'm joking (kind of).

Hitting moving targets is a tiring endeavour.
I recall Kessler’s speech that “no team can withstand that much hitting”. He was correct, by game 6 the Ducks were gassed and Chicago rolled over them in games 6 &7.

Is there a lot of evidence that brothers always want to play together? (Other than the Hamiltons)
His brother is sitting in the stands because of a medical condition and not anything the Flames have determined.

The trade I'd like to see made is with Detroit.
To Detroit
Mike Smith
Michael Stone (or Frolik, just needing to send a cap hit here)
Eat Bread
Jon Gillies
1st in 2019
3rd in 2020 (conditionally a 2nd if the Flames make the Finals)
To Calgary
Jimmy Howard
Gustav Nyquist
Niklas Kronwall
Get all your christmas shopping done in one place. Howard is a major upgrade on Smith. Nyquist is a top 6 forward that can slot in on either wing. Stick him with either Tkachuk and Backlund, or with Janko and Neal. Options options. Kronwall hits like a truck still and can play well enough as the 3rd pairing LHD.
I hate losing picks, but a team of
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Bennett/Nyquist
Bennett/Nyquist-Jankowski-Neal
Czarnik/Dube-Ryan-Hathaway
Giordano-Brodie
Hanifin-Hamonic
Kronwall-Andersson
Rittich
Howard
Is as good of any team in the entire NHL and could easily be a contender for the cup, if not a likely favourite to win the west.

Outside of Nyquist there's not much coming back, and even he's questionable.

Don’t want to come across as too critical here, but that seems like a lot of futures to give up for those three players. Kronwall could be done after this season, Howard is heading to the twilight of his career and would need to be re-signed. How much term is left with Nyquist?
Maybe something along the lines of Smith, Frolik, Mangiapane and a 2nd.

Or a 3rd for Kronwall and we keep the rest. Not interested in dealing our 1st unless it is a big piece coming back.
