I love watching the Oilers lose at home with Jack's commentary the next morning on NHL.com. There are just some things in life that one has to do to make themselves happy.
From the highlights:
"The Oilers. They may not be the best team, but they're the most exciting team in the league."
He said that. Seriously.

Doesn't matter if they win the lottery. If they do, let the hilarity ensue because the genius Stan Bowman lost the trade protection on this years first when he traded next years first in the Mangiapane deal. Sharks get that pick no matter what happens now. It could be a 1st overall for Jake freaking Walman!!!

If it can't be us, I hope this happens. How I would laugh.

In the last 7 drafts, the Oilers have had 11 picks inside the top 100 (Flames have had 25, LOL) and of those 11, 5 have played at least 1 NHL game. Of those 5, NONE are Oilers.

Love this because not only is it an actual quote, but it also foreshadows what is about to unfold during the tenure of ENG XIII.

I saw Oilers Daily post on Instagram that Stan Bowman had worked out a trade last year to acquire Rantanen and Ghostisbehere for Evan Bouchard and a pick....
First, no. Bouchard is only worth that much in the eyes of Edmonton media and most of their fans.
2nd. The cap would not have worked for Edmonton.
Then the comments... Most thought the Oilers dodged a bullet. One guy even said that hockey experts and analytics know that Bouchard is amazing.
Such blindness up north.

It was a few weeks back on a radio hit when a semblance of these words came out of Bob Stauffers enormous yap; (again...paraphrasing)
"Evan Bouchard is the best defenseman in the league when analytics are factored in"
I almost drove off the road...like....what?
And if, in fact, analytics suggest such a preposterous conclusion....then analytics are essentially bupkus and/or need a whole lot of tweaking before they can be taken without a huge grain of salt.

Two good picks in Broberg and Holloway and they are gone because they signed Skinner and Arvidson... They actually could be a contender if they had those players but instead they are shopping at Dollarama for groceries while having a Ferrari in the garage.
Since McDavid the only player they have drafted that is still on their team is Bouchard. They have some assets from a couple other players like Skinner (Jarry) and McLeod (Savoe)... But other than that there is a decade with no player development. That is almost historically bad.

What he meant to say was "Evan Bouchard is the best defenseman in the league when only the analytics that support my position are factored in... and we ignore better players"

Word gets around the league amongst players as the Oiler diaspora move to new teams and recount the horror stories. As long as Mavi and Pissy are there, the culture will not change.

Or "Evan Bouchard may not be the best defenceman in the league, but he's the most exciting one."

That reminds of when their fans used to say things like, "I'd rather lose a game 6-5 than win one 1-0."
