He hasn't evolved much from Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place. If dick and fart jokes had an Oscar category though he would be king.

He easily could have brought something back from space). I have a feeling Hardy is probably good with leaving Venom behind and it's an easy character to literally just attach to someone else.
If I were Holland's agent I would be hard balling each new contract for minimal movies with maximum payment, but with a long term view of playing Spiderman probably until he's 40 or as long as he can. Why not? The dude is almost 30 still looks like a teenager and he's really great. Good enough and popular enough that he could basically demand to do it how he wants and be rich AF. Look at RDJ. You can be Spider-man and win Oscars in Nolan movies. You could do Peter Parker's whole arc into adulthood and retirement and bring in Miles Morales for passing the torch etc... Any long term planning at all and Sony can make a lot of money making some good movies that people like. Their track record without Marvel guiding the ship is pretty crappy though.
|
Tom Holland is doing a great job, and I also don't think we need to keep Spiderman as a teenager forever. As you say, in the comics he grows up and gets married, etc... You can only do so much with teenage storylines. The movies definitely don't need to reboot the whole thing and give us the awkward high school scenes every 10 years.

Yes, I actually like the way they left off Spider-man, despite not really enjoying No Way Home overall. The can reset him into a young adult being poor, working at the Bugle, he has a few villains still around that don't know that HE is Spider-man, but certainly know Spider-man thwarted their plans. Probably can re-intro Gwen Stacy and Conners and Brock. Combine with Daredevil and Kingpin. Maybe some Black Cat. I'd really like to see them sort of follow the Spectacular Spider-man arc, which was unfortunately short-lived but excellent cartoon series.

Further into Madam Web....this is not a finished movie. It has a 2 hour run time and is filled with all sorts of scenes/material that should have been edited out. The dialogue seems to totally break down at points, with junior high play levels of exposition of plot points. I guess there were a lot of reshoots, where they took out the references to the 90s and changed the time period the movie was set in. Maybe they took out plot points and had to clumsily put them back in? Some of it is really weird, almost Family Guy jumping point style exposition.
Apparently Sony had planned to turn this into its own franchise. I have no idea how anyone could look at this "finished" project and think it would be a success. Like this is Andy Samberg and Bill Hader walking into Lorne Michaels office pitching Laser Cats levels of delusion. I liked the energy from the first 30 minutes or so, but then the movie slowly breaks apart into a total mess.

Lol! I havent seen it but that has to be one of the harshest criticisms of a film.
I read that in Tom Segura's voice.
"Like...this is it? Is this done? Is this a 'rough draft' or something? Are you sure? Whats going on here?"

I'm pretty sure the villain's dialogue was all ADR.

Pretty early on, I got the impression that Madame Web was actually a 3 hour pornographic movie, that was edited down for broadcast television. The whole thing became way more entertaining after I started watching it in that context.

Having Sydney Sweeney crammed into a school girl's outfit, so she can play a high schooler, and then having a whole scene dedicated to her exposing her midriff was certainly unwholesome. This movie has a lot of issues.

Joker reviews are out. Not great but not terrible. But honestly it just sounds boring. Can’t say the trailers moved the needle much for me. This probably confirms I’ll wait for streaming.

I still don't understand the love for the first one. It was dull too.

I actually really like the first one, my only real beef was that it had nothing to do with the Joker and was essentially a beat-for-beat remake of Taxi Driver with less inspiration and originality.
But damn if Joaquin Phoenix didn't do a hell of a job in that film.
It had its positives but I didnt think it was as great as some people and the Box Office made it out to be.
Same with 'The Batman' it had its moments, but there was a lot of lag-time.

Your only beef being that it was a ####ty derivative of a far superior movie is a pretty good reason to not "really like" a movie imo.

They're not all going to be Citizen Kane.

Joker took influence from a few films. Although it is essentially a modern telling of Taxi Driver, it takes a broader approach, which I appreciated.
Personally, I thought Phoenix's performance was outstanding, and the updated take on mental illness and misanthropy was effective, IMO.
Plus, the climactic scene on the talk show is one of my favorite in cinema.
And The Social Network was as good as Citizen Kane.

I quite liked the first one. The Phoenix performance alone made it worth watching. Not a favorite movie for me, but one that I needed to see and have no regrets having watched it. But yes, not really a Joker movie at all. More a social commentary type movie. What having the movie named Joker did was allow the movie to take place in a less realistic reality, without ruining the suspension of disbelief for the audience. The writers could focus on the plot points and social commentary and do so in a reality without realistic bounds.

A Joker movie didn't need to be made. Phoenix was great but the movie wasn't. It literally could have been called anything else and you have the same movie. If anything, to me at least, it takes away the best part of who the Joker is. His motivation for why he does what he does. All that movie did was show he was an incel loser blaming others for his problems. Killed the mystique around the character. Somethings are better off left alone.
Just a riff on King of Comedy and Taxi Driver. Watch those instead.
