Well if Stone never plays again, then yeah, the right side is also a problem. But that is not very likely at this point. Conversely, Valimaki not getting back to 100% this year is a very real concern. And the fact that Brodie shoots left is irrelevant to discussion of the right side - he is a right side D, and that debate is over.

I'm not too surprised that we're looking at depth on D, and on the left side in particular. As good as Valimaki and Kylington have been, the playoffs is not a good place for their weaknesses to get exposed. Kylington still has some work to do defensively, although he's been much better this year.

Valimaki will need some time to get back to game speed. Playing third pair minutes is fine, but say Gio or Hanifin get injured in the playoffs, then playing Valimaki in a top 4 role, having just come off of a serious injury and still being in his first year, is not ideal.

I think we end up acquiring a guy like Joel Edmundson or Mark Pysyk for a pick.

We could always acquire Brandon Davidson, having another Giordano can never hurt.

Valimaki will get some AHL games on the first pair to help ease him back in.

Is Czarnik expendable? Is it wise to look to move him for a pick? Should the what is the best way for BT to manage this asset.

Mark Stone from the Sens at the deadline to play with Backlund and Tkachuk.

He is amazing defensively, amazing offensively, and is absolutely a perfect fit for that line because it will remain 3M, but just get better.

I have no idea what it would cost, but adding a talent like that to this roster would be incredible.

Stone would be an amazing add. Need to re-sign him though and that is pricy but probably doable.

1st, Valimaki or Rasmus, another piece.

How often do trade deadline deals come with extensions though? Without that i think you pay quite a bit less.

I think we have to keep in mind that next year we have to sign Tkachuk and likely a new #1 goalie.
I don't see how they fit in another high priced UFA. Nor would I want to give up the acquisition price.

Stone would cost too much in all aspects. He would cost 1st + one of the 3 rookie D, and likely another piece and then likely $8M on a long term deal

He would be an absolute amazing fit on the Backlund-Tkachuk line though oh my!

Bear with the following hypothetical situation.

All prior to the start of next season

Out:
Smith: $4.25MM
Stone: $3.5MM
Frolik: $4.3MM
Prout: $.8MM

= $12.85MM minimum off the roster

Cap increase ~$4MM. = ~$17MM total increase

In:
Stone: $8MM

Leaves you still needing to sign Tkachuk, Bennett, Rittich, and another goalie unless you are keeping Gillies for $9MM.

The numbers don't quite work. But another minor move and they start to get pretty close.

And for a month and a half of Stone plus a deep playoff run? Who knows what could happen.

Honestly I would do a rental for Mark Stone. I know that sucks to be 'giving away' picks and prospects but we are a legit team this year and one of the most dominant teams in the West. And I'm not gonna say the C-word but man it all pays off if we managed to get there.

It puts us over the top. And I would trust Anderson as a 1b vs Smith in the playoffs.

Mark Stone
Craig Anderson

For

1st
2nd (becomes a first if Calgary reaches the Conference finals)
Klylington
Dube
Mike Smith

Something around that I would be okay with.

Neal-Jankowski-Bennett (2.5)
Dube-Ryan-Cznarik
Lomberg (.7) Hathaway (1)

Giordano-Brodie
Hanifin-Hamonic
Valimaki-Andersson
Kylington

Rittich (3)
Gillies

Buyouts
Total cap hit: 83.4M

Assuming the cap is north of 83.5M, which is reasonable. And you can get rid of Frolik and Stone without any salary (big if). And that Stone signs for 8M (much much much bigger if). It's doable. Of course the goalies being questionable.

I see Mike Smith has an 8 team no trade list.

I wonder if Detroit is on it. I'm ready for some sort of blockbuster with the Wings.

I want Howard and Nyquist. Smith obviously has to go the other way and he can take Frolik and his ####ing loud mouth agent with him.

Send them whatever it takes to make up the difference and try to sign Nyquist to an extension, maybe even Howard too i suppose.

I don't want to see the best Flames team I've watched in probably 30 years get submarined by a sieve and 3rd liner whining through his agent on twitter.

Agreed, send down Mike Smith then trade Michael Frolík for a back-up goaltender and as for James Neal...

I'd be looking at a scenario with the Carolina Hurricanes:

Petr Mrazek: 1.5M OR Curtis McElhinney: 0.825M (Need goaltending, #1 need)
Michael Ferland: 1.75M (Need RW depth, #2 need)
Justin Wiliams: 4.5M (Need depth scoring and veteran leadership, #3 need)

For

Smith: 4.25M

And some variety of:

1st through 7th round pick (Everyone loves picks)

Curtis Lazar 0.95M (rebounding in AHL, controlled RFA)
John Gillies 0.75M (Goalie? Who ever knows with goalies?)
Tyler Parsons 0.675M (Goalie? Who ever knows with goalies?)
Mason McDonald .823M (Goalie? Who ever knows with goalies?)

Austin Czarnik 1.5M (Could play a role on Carolina, doesn't fit the system here)
James Neal 5.75M (It's a cost controlled contract that makes sense to take on if you believe James Neal will produce again. He could be good with Terevainen and Aho, and provide the scoring that Ferland was. Salary retention may be required for his contract.)

We likely have some CHL prospects like Joly that we could afford to part with as well.

If we bring home Ferland and McElhinney, that's two more Flames picks for the playoffs, and something inside me really loves having homegrown players on the roster.
