Sucks that Edmonton lucked into McDavid. Players like that historically in any league end up winning. The fact it took so long just shows you how incompetent Edmonton has been.
All we can hope for is that he leaves after this.

I still predict that at least one of them leaves after this, whether they win or not. Can you imagine re-signing and having to spend another 7 or 8 years in that city?? Yikes. I think both of them probably want to go to a nicer, warmer climate where they won't get stalked by dirtbag Oiler fans on a daily basis, and people will just leave them alone.
They've brought a Cup to Edmonton like they promised and their job would be done. It would be a perfect opportunity to go elsewhere and make some serious bank to close out their careers. If Edmonton still wants to ice a competitive team going forward, I doubt they'll be able to afford both of them.

Feels like when Lebron won a championship in Cleveland and left a season after.
Some different circumstances, but kind of feels that way.

Better hope if only one leaves that it's McDavid, because he's the only one can carry this team to where it is right now.

Preparing for the worst tonight, hoping for the best, though the way the series has trended, it's over. I'm happy to be wrong. My son has a playoff lacrosse game about the same time as the game so that'll be a nice distraction.
Let's just get this thing over with and get on with the summer and see what Conroy can pull off on draft day.

If Draisaitl were to leave, Perry to retire (it was speculated) and Kane to be gone the grease would be much less unlikable. Still unlikable because it's edmonton... but less players to hate. I second the earlier posts that Pissy just seems like the most unlikable guy on that team- arrogant prick. McDavid seems fine- not much for personality... but good with the community and is very tolerant of the oilers media and their stupid questions. I could easily see hotshot Draisaitl wanting to play in a bigger US market like the Rangers or Kings to feed his ego.

It depends if they want to win or not. Cup contenders dont have the cap space. I could see a san jose/columbus/utah type destination but it comes down to whether they want to spend the peak of their careers on a terrible team or not.

As an aside to all the talk of passionate fans, casuals, etc, I will say one of the most revealing things is that it’s become pretty clear some people here hate the Oilers more than they love the Flames, and maybe enjoy playing the role of a fan more than they like actual hockey.
Regardless of what happens, I think all the people who say they’re done with the NHL if the Oilers win should just be done with the NHL anyway. The hockey is still hockey, it’s still going to be played and it’s still going to be just as fun to watch as it’s always been if you actually enjoy the sport, and the Flames still exist as a team you can cheer for. Another team winning the cup, even if they’re our biggest rivals, doesn’t change anything. Real Flyers fans didn’t stop being Flyers fans because Crosby and the Penguins won a bunch of cups.
FOI has been a pretty big drag for a while, not just the playoffs, but we’re talking years. We fight about the dumbest things, and that’s coming from an expert in starting fights about dumb things because it’s fun, but I get the sense some of you take it too seriously (like, “secret Oiler fans” was a fun thing, and people kind of ruined it by obsessing about it). A poster above said there are two types of fans, die hards and casuals. I think there are two more. Fans of “the business of hockey” (which I find kind of boring, but still love reading the passion some guys have for the draft and stuff like that), and fans of fandom, guys who just like the idea of being a fan but don’t understand the spirit of it and end up mired in all the worst parts about it.
As much as I’ll hate the Oilers winning (for the fun of it), there’s a lot of kids who will have this memory forever if they do, and that’s cool. I didn’t grow up here, so I’ve had the pleasure of having a “home team” in a few different major sports, and unfortunately I’ve never experienced “the home team” winning it all in the NHL (or the MLB… or the NFL… haha) so I’ll be happy for those kids. And really, that’s a bigger positive than any negative narrative we could come up with, because I’m sure those who were around for Calgary’s win (especially if you were young) have memories around it you’ll never forget.
Still, go Panthers. I still think they’ve got this. But whatever happens, tomorrow is the same as today for Flames fans. Nothing that happens tonight matters. And if you think it does, to the point where you want to stop being a fan, guess what? You already stopped, you just haven’t accepted it yet. For the rest of us, on to the draft where another piece of the puzzle of what this franchise is going to look like comes into view.
At risk of sounding too corny, just remember this is all supposed to be fun.

The Flames were also in extension talks at some point with every pending UFA they dealt away.
That's indicative of absolutely nothing.

So every year do a "consolation prize" bet just in case the oilers win the cup. I guess it's like a type of insurance, you don't want the negative event to happen, but this will help. Happily the oilers went on a losing tear to start the season. My only regret is that I bought too late.
I'm resigned to the oilers winning the cup...but it's a good chunk of change for the old Disneyland pot.
And if they don't win, all the better!
Ps, you'll all be happy to know that I have never ever made a winning sports bet before.

It's the fact a team is being rewarded for being incompetent, and resorting to diving and playing for powerplays.
That isn't hockey. The players are talented enough to put their skill on display 5 on 5 yet they refuse to do that.
Let's not forget the media literally whining and begging the NHL to change the rules for McDavid.

In the end no matter what happens tonight...nothing really changes in our day to day lives tomorrow...and that's generally what I try to remember now.
I love being a Flames fan, I love hating on the Oilers, but really the Oilers winning tonight changes nothing for me when I wake up tomorrow morning.
Still have to wake up and go to work.
Still get to hang out and have a blast with my daughter and wife.
Still get to be excited about who the Flames pick in the draft this week, and what trades might happen (Consider me one of those "Business of Hockey" fans PepsiFree is talking about).
And in the end the Oilers are still No Good, and if they do win it took 4 1st overall picks (including a generational talent) and 11 top 10 picks in a 13 year time period for them to win a cup. In 2015 when they won the McDavid lottery it seemed pretty inevitable that they would win a cup...it sucks because it looked like they might actually blow it...but this was always the most likely outcome once they drafted 97.

The NHL playoffs are some of the best entertainment there is, they always deliver. If we take our allegiances out of it, its been an incredible final with an incredible story. I've been glued to this series (and these playoffs in general). You couldn't set up a better finale.
Go Panthers.

I don't understand why Oilers fans are on a Flames forum. There's no rule against you being allowed to cheer for any team. But I just can't imagine myself going to a rival fan board to talk about how great the Flames are, if they were winning.
For Oilers fans, you do realize this is our worst nightmare, right? I don't think there will be many rational discussions tonight if the Oilers win. People are going to be in a really foul mood if that happens.
Our team just blew up the roster and the team we hate most is 1 game away from winning the cup.

Well said.
Every season, one fanbase's biggest rival is going to hoist the cup.
We've had a nice run of the Oilers being awful. if it ends, it ends.
if it continues...it will bring me insurmountable joy

Yup. Just not a hockey thing either. Superstars usually end up winning.
I was just thinking how Messi kept losing with the national team, but they finally won.
Mackinnon, Crosby, Ovechkin. Gretzky, Mario, Sakic, Yzerman. Lindros is the only one that comes to mind that never won.
It is what it is.

If the oilers win tonight, it will cement them as my new #1 team. I’ll keep the flames in my thoughts, I don’t hate them, but Edmonton will be my new team. I was tired of cheering for sad sack franchises. It’s just a form of entertainment. It’s like picking a favourite tv show and then hating it but continuing to watch it even though there are better tv shows out there. At some point it makes sense to stop torturing yourself.
No way the oilers don’t complete the reverse sweep. They are the team of destiny. Resistance is futile.
