I would prefer the Flames not give up any assets for rentals unless they run into injuries before the trade deadline.

I just really want Schenn.

Bennett-Schenn-Neal is a beauty of a line. All three are total #######s

Agreed we should avoid the rental market. I would have more interest moving out a player with some term (Frolik, Stone, Ryan come to mind) along with our 1st for a player with at least another year left on their deal (Schenn as an example)

Flames could then look to recoup their first in the summer by moving a guy like Brodie so they don’t commit big money and term to him or lose him for nothing the following summer.

I would be all for a rental Spezza. He's still got game, and I doubt he'd be too expensive.

Spezza wanted out of Ottawa because he didn’t want to play in Canada. Not sure if that has changed?

He’s older now, a pending UFA and has a rapidly decreasing amount of chances at a cup; I’m sure he’d welcome a trade to any contender including a Canadian one.

Cost effective rentals
Kronwall
Spezza

Core addition through upgrading
Schenn

That’s who I’d be happy to see us go after, if we do go after Schenn though the cost that will demand will make it so that rentals aren’t attainable or desirable this year so it’s got to make sense. Jankowski and a 1st are almost gaurenteed to be involved and we would need money going the other way to make it work in the short and long term which complicates things.

I think Spezza + Kronwall being had in deals for b prospects/mid picks and contracts like Stone would make a ton of sense especially if we have an equally good January.

Given that Dallas is fighting for their playoff lives..I suspect he would be very expensive...

Flames looking at Left handed options on the blue line because they wonder if Valimaki will return to full speed after injury

Frolik won't be traded by the Flames unless it makes them better or gives them assets to make them better.

Vancouver is testing the market on Goldobin

Pens and Wild are kind of stuck in a paralysis of whether to sell or add

Rangers will sell but may wait till closer to the deadline to make moves.

How long do the Sens wait for commitments from Duchene and Stone? Sens also had talks with Dzingel

There have been talks between Ferland and the Canes but if he doesn't sign he will be moved. Contenders will be interested

Not convinced the Oilers are done making moves. Puljujarvi's future is uncertain

Id still be keen on grabbing Puljujjarvi. I just think he's gonna Schultz the Oilers. He's too good to be that bad.

I don't understand why we need a LHD... isn't Kylington playing as good as any defenseman we could acquire? He's basically NHL ready now, and has been impressive.

Just saw Ovi is skipping the All Star Game......he has to sit out one game, either the Leaf game before the break or the Flames game after the break. Looks like the Flames might get lucky.

Playoff depth. If even one d-man gets hurt the Flames could be screwed. Need to bring in a warm body or two around the deadline just for insurance.

Valimaki is only 20, so if he isn't 100% (a legitimate concern after a high ankle sprain), then he isn't an NHL defenseman.

That leaves only 3 (I don't even know who's next on the depth charts on the left side).

Now, imagine an injury to Giordano...

Haniifin
Kylington
Valimaki
Valiev?
Healey?

I believe Valiev can play 3rd pairing in the NHL at a competent level. But thats risky on the depth.

Flames only play 2 right shot D on the current roster. Who knows when Stone comes back as blood clots can be career threatening. Prout is useless as well so the depth on the right side is just as thin as the left side.

Still seems more likely for Stone to get back to form than Valimaki.

Also, Prout isn't Bobby Orr, but he is better than any of the options on the left side.

Brodie
Hamonic
Andersson
Stone
Prout

doesn't concern me.

I wouldn't mind Goldobin. Cost might not be too high and he has good skill

Put you depth charts side by side. Your left side excludes Gio altogether (I know your point was to show how thing that side is) but when you talk about the right side youninclude all options.

Gio
Hanifin
Valimaki
Kylington

Right side
Brodie
Hamonic
Andersson
Stone

Both go 4 deep but one of the right side guys is a LHD. Also Stone for all we know may never play again. Blood clots have ended careers in sports before (Chris Bosh).

At the end of the day I support the Flames adding defensive depth and assume left hand shots are easier to come by. Definitely more experience on the right side but it remains that this team typically will only dress 2 right shot D and only one spare is an okay replacement and he has had a long term injury.
