I use my points for flights, and it's basically a dollar value point trade, so you can use all your points and cash, and in the end it is just that points are worth less than cash. I think it's pretty transparent.
If you are on the RBC rewards site, a couple times I've been able to book the cheap outbound, upgraded return, and only had to pay the upgrade for the second flight but the first automatically gets the same perks and upgrade. That was with Westjet flights, and it may be fixed now but it worked for a few years.
Sometimes they have gift card deals, so things like Amazon are worth watching and chasing in on.
