He has painted himself into a corner...but if that corner means voting against a tax increase then you have to think that is a good spot to be in. Much better than if he said he would support them no matter what and voted in favour of the increase.

Whenever a politician enters the water it gets muddy.

Except that Ignatieff is not really against the HST and would still implement it, so why bring down the government over it.

I think the arguement here is that he's not in a corner at all. If he doesn't want to go to the polls his party will still vote against the government, but there will be a number of missing Liberal MPs for the vote. Making promises and bending them is essentially what embodies being a politician. Just last spring Jack Layton made a statement that there was no way his party would vote with the conservative government, and alas reality changed. Technically the grits will be able to say that they always voted against the government, but at the same time not rock the boat enough to force an unwanted election on the Canadian people.

Well, yes... obviously he could do that. Unfortunately that kind of tactic will make him look even weaker than Dion. Kind of like the kid who keeps challenging the neighborhood bully and then when the bully calls him on it... the kid is no where to be found. .... all talk.. no action.

Thats why everyone looks at Jack as being a sleazy used car salesman type of politician. Nobody respects him or his word.

Of course they can... but if they do, people will remember that when push comes to shove they weaseled out of their threats.

Why are the Liberals?'

So I'm doubly pissed off with the NDP - first for supporting a government that I have deep ideological difference with; second for being so two faced.

I wrote to them saying that if they prop up the government, they have lost a staunch supporter. I'll go back to the Greens. Not that it matters much. No matter how much I go knocking on doors and handing out pamphlets, there is no way either party is winning this riding.
Do you live in Alberta? I don't think it will be possible to vote for the Green party in Alberta. The party was dissolved in July 2009 when it was unable to file financial returns with Elections Alberta as required by law.

Any party that can not keep themselves viable by filing required returns is a party I do not want running the country of Canada.

The provincial and federal parties are separate (same with the Alberta Liberals and Alberta Conservatives). I believe the provincial greens lost their party status, but the national party is still fully functioning as normal, and will be valid in all provinces in a federal election.
