Why should I do that? It's like telling you to watch Star Wars in black and white.

So I decided to do the good son thing and take my dad to see it yesterday. I tried to book my tickets for the I-Max version but the system said that that theatre did not accept on line booking.
I drove down and it was near impossible to find parking. Finally got in and it was completely sold out even though we showed up two hours early for the show.
So Avatar probably going to have to wait.

Same thing happened to me, was not able to purchase tickets online, stupid thing never worked. I finally got fed up and saw it in Real3D instead, and purchased Imax tickets for a later (several days) show at the same time. I had to stand in line both times (longer for Imax) but it was worth it, the visual experience is mind boggling, worth every penny.
I was not enamored by the story, but it is good enough where I just didn't care. It's the kind of movie that stays with you because the imagery is so vivid. The visual effects are beyond what I was expecting, and I was expecting a lot. At no time did I not believe the CG scenes were absolutely realistic. To be able to create an entire alien ecosystem and an alien race of humanoids in digital, and make the physics, the look, the emotions, everything, photo realistic is, well no words really.

Just saw it for the second time this week... One of a few movies of which I have seen more then once in the theater...
It was even better the second time around... So much more you see and hear that I missed the first time around. I just cant get over the graphics, and how well it is put together...
This is a film that must be seen on the big screen, in 3d. I love how the 3d is not over done. It is like watching a play, there is just depth to it, nothing really pops out of the screen like other 3d movies which makes them cheesy.
If your on the shelf about seeing this, take my advice and dont wait until it comes out on video... It must be seen in the theater.

Saw it last night in Imax 3D. Pretty mixed feelings about it. I have lots of criticisms with the plot and the writing in retrospect, but few of them were big enough to take me out of the engagement with the film. But the literal deus ex machina ending on par with Tolkien's taxi-eagles was a little annoying. The characters were very good for this type of film, especially Weaver's character and the main villain. 3D was well done, and I liked the fact that it was used more-so for the added depth rather than throwing things at the screen. The character design reminded me a lot of the martians from Futurama, yet they were extremely well-rendered and expressive.
A good epic will usually bring tears to my eyes a couple times or give me chills, and despite all the spectacular visuals, this had nothing that evoked a psychosomatic response for me; not the incredible scenery, not the deaths of secondary characters, not the supposedly emotional speeches. I enjoyed it, but wasn't moved by it the way that I thought I would be; it didn't have any of those Braveheart/Gladiator/LoTR/300 moments that just hit me in the heart.

Those films didn't do anything for me, yet this one did. Maybe it's because most of them ended with sombre endings that didn't get a rise out of me.
And I just plain hated LoTR personally. Overrated junk. All my friends were crazy about these movies at the time and talking about the books and everything I simply did not care for the Tolkien verse. I couldn't buy that world. When they were eating taters, I kept wondering how the parallel evolution of potatoes in South America of real earth happened with potatoes in the fantasy european/norse inspired middle earth.

Yeah, all of those movies have plot holes, and I would easily say that Avatar is better at least than 300 and Gladiator, but I was just surprised that it didn't hold more of an emotional impact for me.

You know, I liked 300 enough. But it should be nowhere near LotR, Braveheart or Gladiator. That is like comparing Nickelback to the Beatles and Led Zepplin.

Wow, 300? Also shocked that they were mentioned in the same sentence with some of those other movies.
Good point Octo, I don't recall "feeling anything" in Avatar, the way I did at least 3 times in every LOTR movies. T2 does it to me as well!
I need to watch Avatar again, I can't even remember it the way I remember the day I saw a certain LOTR movie, etc. Other than it was the last day of xmas holidays.

Not really. I was just comparing recent epics that popped into my head. I could throw Alexander and Troy (in my opinion, the worst two epics in recent cinema), or Arthur (a solid B-) into the mix as well. The fact that 300 isn't nearly as good as Gladiator, LotR, or Braveheart (or Avatar, for that matter) doesn't mean it can't be included in the discussion: 300 was extremely good at its epic moments: speeches, battle sequences, memorable deaths, (which was the reason I listed it along with the others, because I wasn't talk about film quality, just epic moment quality), it's just the some of the acting was pretty ham-fisted, the overall pacing was poor, and the storyline was weak.

I still think my comparison works. Just change the genre from movie epics to successful rock bands of the last four decades.

Going to see it for a second time tomorrow night.
I find it interesting all these Avatar comparisions on movie sites to
Pocahontas
LOTR
Platoon
Mutiny on the Bounty
and other movies
Perhaps Cameron was simply pointing the finger at how the Tribes in the Rainforest have been driven from their peaceful existance all in the name of resources. Or perhaps he is pointing the finger at American foriegn policies that the United States have made a historical practice of pillaging any 3rd world nation for profit regardless of the means.
He creates this fantasic visual escape and then you watch it be destroyed.
Avatar is an eyegasim. Now over 1.8 billion worldwide Its going to be interesting to see what happens come Grammy time.
