How has Huberdeau "not earned" the right to be captain? He committed 9 years of his career to be in Calgary.
Because he had a poor offensive season? Should have taken the C away from Iginla a time or 2 if that's the case.
Cant give it to Backlund unless he signs an extension either.

So, he committed to 9 years? How does that give him the right to be captain? He got 10.5; that's why he committed.

It’s not coddling at all - he led by example all season. He did what the coach asked. He tried to play the role Darryl assigned him.
You only need to watch any of the dozen or more plays in the first month of the season where Huberdeau giftwraps an empty net and 20 feet of space to a teammate only for them to flub it to see what it looks like when one guy is playing 3D chess and everyone else is playing Hungry Hungry Hippos.

He is committed because the team made him feel wanted. He is also by all accounts an amazing spokesman and leader in the dressing room from everything I have heard. While I believe Andersson will end up with the C I would certainly not be upset with Huberdeau getting it. He definitely should at least have an A going forward.

Iginla was the Flames' points leader every season he was captain.

And he still never came close to cracking PPG when Darryl was coach.

What doesn't give him the right?
Stupid stance that just because he gets paid the most, he doesnt qualify.
If he has the respect of the guys and his coach, and he is a leader in the room there is zero reason he cant be captain particularly because he has committed to actually be in Calgary.

Backlund is too much of the old regime for me to want him to be Captain. Been here 14 years, but they've only made the playoffs 5 times and won 3 rounds. He's had a letter for most of it.
I'm unfairly pinning a lot on him, but I still think we need a new direction and a new set of voices in the room.

I didn't say he couldn't be captain. I said he hasn't earned it. Amazing how you don't agree so it's a "stupid stance". Some of the positions given here for making him captain are the only stupid stances.

Will they re-sign Lindholm? If they can, (despite some perceptions of common sense here its a no brainer and you make correlating moves after signing him). But it's not their call. And if I'm reading the room in that presser properly, I'm not so sure Lindholm is all that interested. (Conroy wincing as he said it's a work in progress)
Like serivalli said earlier today, you're guaranteed to not have Lindholm, Hanifin or Toffoli walking into camp with put a new contract.
Basically I agree with you on everything you said!
My guess is their deadline for that decision is draft weekend. I don't believe for 1 second Conroy is going to sit on his hands on this.
|
Do they? I am of the thought that if the Flames don't have a solid idea that they are intent on staying then you trade them before or at the draft, don't sit on your hands like Tre did. Don't wait for July 1st because it is too late. On this I mean guys like Hanifin and Lindholm. The other guys like Backlund/Tanev can be traded after the draft or by the deadline.
And DO NOT sign any of the guys like Lucic etc. Let them all walk and plan on having most of the positions filled by young guys (maybe you keep a guy like Lewis to help ease the young guys, but not as an every day player).
Basically everything you said I agree with!

Iginla was 4th on the Penguins in playoff scoring the year he was traded.
Huberdeau was sent to a far less ideal situation.

OK....so how is it "earned" in your eyes.
And the stupidity of saying he didnt commit to Calgary for any reason other than money, is self explanatory. He was 1 year from a UFA payday that would have certainly come close to his current amount even though it would be 1 less year.

Well, he only got 32 points in 70 games in his sophomore season.
To save everyone time, the followup post is going to be "yeah, but he wasn't Captain." My followup post to that is going to be "neither was Huberdeau last year."

It shouldn't be us fans determining who does and doesn't deserve the captaincy. It should be the guys in the room. Whether or not Hubby deserves it or not, I'm sure Connie / Huska will determine after gauging the feel from the dressing room.

I'd pay real money to watch Harvey the Hound coach a game.
We're not making the playoffs anyways, lean into the gimmicks!
We could be the Hockey version of the 'Washington Generals.'

On the ice. Not by what you think his leadership role was in the dressing room. Not that you think that he played like Suter wanted him to. Not by his commitment to 8 years. Stop making excuses for the guy. He was a bust. Hopefully, he'll earn his 10.5 in the future and show he was worth the expense..
