Looking at draft picks in spots 20-32 since 2000 and what a dogs breakfast, other than 2003. There may be 15 actual players of consequence out of those 300+ guys picked and people are debating that adding one of the first rounders to move Monahan's contract is bad, just wow.
Give me Kadri any day, and I loved Monahan up to today. I just don't think he will ever return to what he was after 2 hip surgeries and congratulate Tre for making this move.

Re: Lucic vs. Monahan.
I don't believe it was about Murray Edwards trying to save a few bucks or Lucic exercising a NTC. Lucic has a role on this team, and maybe a significant one for a team trying to contend, and Monahan no longer did.

Assuming the deals weren't really out there for Lucic, this is ok. I would have rather took a gamble on a Monahan resurgence if we could have offloaded Lucic and not given up our first.

I think there were deals out there for Lucic that were allowed by his trade list, but not ones that didn't send Salary back to the Flames.
The Boston rumor came up around the time Kadri and Calgary supposedly agreed to a deal.

Seems obvious they would have done this if possible...they had Kadri locked up for a week, had to make it happen

Agreed. Plus, where would Monahan play? 4th line center? I don't think so.
Big salary, no place to play, injury prone.
Easy decision to make. You keep the big winger who is still one of the best scrappers in the league for one more year, especially when you know the Kadri/Kane fireworks are going to happen this year at some point.

This sounds right to me. These kind of deals are pretty complex and no way Boston can do it without offloading themselves.

Or they wanted to keep Lucic over Monahan even at the cost of the first round pick.

I don't know if this is 100% accurate but I thought a flow chart of the conditions would look hilarious.

Bingo.
Lucic is way more valuable to the team than the current incarnation of Monahan.

Not sure why teams with the cap space weren't lining up for this deal. A 1st for only a year of Monahan? Plus Monahan could bounce back? No brainer.

This gives me flashbacks to reading code in FORTRAN… which I haven't had to do, thank God, since 1986.

Either that or the deals were too tough to negotiate for Lucic without money coming back and/or teams were more willing to gamble on Monahan bouncing back than Lucic not declining more.

Montreal is also paying 100% of the 6.125 salary commitment less escrow to Monahan too. The cap number is tough to move than tack on the salary.
