The success of junior hockey relies a lot on a certain image and standing in communities around the country. It's not just putting butts in seats but these kids move around the country and live with billet parents who dedicate time and money to basically help kids develop their skills. There's a whole weird ecosystem around junior hockey that you don't see a lot in other major sports.
It would be a bad look for Hockey Canada if the entire system that requires a lot of trust and support from the public is seen to be pumping out sex offenders at an alarmingly high rate.

The bulk of that went to payouts for Graham James victims. Doesn’t make it any less appalling just adds some context.

This is insane.
You have to be morally corrupt and not have a soul to be in charge of anything related to Hockey Canada, see this going on repeatedly and think the proper solution is to just keep paying the victims.
Unreal. This has to be the tip of the iceberg too. We know many victims don't say anything.

I thought over 35 years it would have been higher TBH, especially when factoring in GJ
I imagine the majority of the incidents never get reported out of fear, etc

Listening to 960 and it seemed like they were stretching a bit. Pretty much said HC needs to control how 10 year olds are given special treatment when they are good.
How could they possible control that?

Honestly, for over 35 years to only have 8 million is $225K a year. There are 600,000 kids enrolled in HC.
Maybe I am crazy, but i expected the settlements over that time would be much larger just based on a general risk profile of children around adults.
Doesn't make it right to 'cover up' and pay out, but this amount actually shows it has seldom happened (Or more likely the person - Player or Other - doesnt report)

Generally a very small percentage of the victims are saying anything. So I'd imagine the number of actual incidents is much, much higher.

The fact they are taking this money from youth registration and using it to pay hush money is even more disgusting. Glad to know my 12 year old daughters mandatory fees for house league hockey help these scum bags silence victims. Clean the ####ing house of these vermin.

I think we need to demand better - or at least transparency
But if the victim doesn’t want it public it is a double edged sword when it happens
Just was surprised it wasn’t higher over 35 years with that many children and adults involved

How does Scott Smith still have a job? I would hope the only reason they haven't turfed him yet is to keep getting his testimony.
He's been with hockey Canada since 1995 and a vp since 1998. He is most obviously part of the problem.

I doubt Hockey Canada is paying settlements for some incident on some random bantam hockey team which dramatic lowers the numbers of people they would be paying for

Are you guys saying that your work place doesn't have a special fund set aside to settle sexual assault claims?

Not exposing them to sexual predators would be an ok start

Ottawa hockey coach Kelly Jones was sentenced to 8 years in prison in 2014 for sexual assaults involving 11 victims over 3 decades. Hockey Canada told me Jones is the perpetrator who was mentioned (but unnamed) in govt hearings this week tied to 4 abuse settlements worth $1M+.
