Why would the Flames agree to that? Particularly this early in the summer.

He probably won’t sign this early in the summer. Tkachuk spoke about Matthews contract changing the game, my guess is he uses that contract as a reference. I think Tkachuk has the stomach for a holdout.

For sure, but I also think BT has the stomach.
But that's where the pinch happens. Once training camp opens - that's your first pinch point. Then the vice tightens when regular season games start.
Tkachuk can look at someone like Nylander - who got paid but had a terrible season - and decides if he wants to do that.
And the Flames will have to make a similar determination.
Someone will have to blink.
I suspect the Flames want either a 3 or 7 year deal
Tkachuk wants a 5.
It'll end up being 6.

I could see 6 x 8.5m AAV . I also don’t think Tkachuk cares that Nylander had a bad season. All he’ll care about is that the holdout worked, and Nylander got paid.

6 years would help stagger the expiration dates of the big contracts.
Right now: Johnny and Gio have 3 years left; Monahan and Lucic have 4 years; and Backlund, Lindholm, and Hanifin have 5 years.
The other option would be to go short with a two year deal and hope to cash in big after the new US tv deal is signed.

Cause he Could get Drafted in the seattle lottery if he isnt protected and he may use that as a negotiating tool to say hey ill sign example 7mill/6yrs if you gurantee me that when the Lottery draft comes you protect my rights

That's definitely not a concern, the Flames will obviously protect him.
Tkachuk knows that, and everyone in the Flames organization knows that as well.

Tkachuk is one of the top three forwards on the team. Leaving him unprotected would be sheer incompetence, and a fireable offense.
Tkachuk does not spend a single moment’s thought about the expansion draft.

Yeah, Chucky firmly holds a protected fw spot regardless of the deal he signs. Non issue.
I mean unless he puts up James Neal numbers and makes more than Johnny and Monny.

That Could Very Well be true but Gm's/teams are gonna look for any Loophole or discount they can work on a contract more then ever with the cap versus other year weather we think he would be protected or we dont doesnt matter it can still be flosted in the negotations to try and drop the value of the contract slightly to help in cap space just saying is all

No. Don’t think so... but man, you gotta punctuate... was a rough read.

If Treliving said to Tkachuk that he'll guarantee that he'll protect him in the expansion draft for a drop in salary, the reaction would be stunned silence for a moment, followed by rounds of laughter. I doubt they could get back to serious negotiations until the next day.
