It is a useless statistic. How many times has a goal been scored on a line change or just after a penalty kill. Or even if your in a quick transition, usually it's down to two defenseman and two opposition forwards, while everyone else is skating to join the play.

Look at the Avs current roster and all their +/- stats. Almost all of them are in the negative. It's more of a team metric than an individual one.

Totally,
I mean if a forward is way down at the offensive blue line and his team gives up a 2 on 1 goal, that's not his fault at all, what was he supposed to do, hustle back, not give up the puck?

But a guy who's 39 years old and isn't scoring on a team where he is still getting over 15m per game? I don't think he can take out Brouwer or Frolik on their lines, and he can't do what Versteeg does when he plays with Monahan. And I'd rather not use an Iginla on the 4th line.
Here is some food for thought (and I am not sure I quite buy it, but here it is nonetheless):

Perhaps Iginla is just a terrible fit on the Avs. Remember when the Rangers went out and acquired Gomez and Drury to play with Jagr? What ended up happening? Jagr did worse. Drury and Gomez were very 'north-south' players that played with speed, and Jagr was all about puck-possession. That is what Jagr himself said.

Now, looking at Duchene and MacKinnon - Iginla just doesn't fit there. Not much else in terms of scoring ability throughout the lineup. Maybe there is something to be said about a lack of complimentary linemates for Iginla?

From another perspective (and again, I don't think it would really work), perhaps Iginla's game works much better with Monahan. Someone that doesn't really attack with speed. We all know that Iginla is a very underrated playmaker. Maybe he could fit on a line with Versteeg and Monahan? I think there is probably SOME truth in what I wrote above, but I am also of the opinion that he just won't be able to keep up or be effective - at least not night in, night out.

I just kind of thought of that while I read your post.

If Hudler could find success with Monahan, Iginla certainly could. Hudler was actually slower than Iginla.

I would take Iginla over Chiasson in the top 9 most nights.

Gaudreau Bennett Brouwer
Tkachuk Backlund Frolik
Ferland Monahan Versteeg

That's my present top 9. I'd rather all those guys than Iggy. Now maybe he can change my mind the second half. Jagr certainly was productive at 39. But not many other players.

Watching the Av's and the Leafs tonight and I actually am surprised how well Iginla skates compared to what has been reported. He doesn't seem any slower than Monahan to me. I am not saying we should bring him back but it seems people saying his skating is really bad are either trumpeting what others have said or just exaggerating.

There are a top few CP generally accepted narratives that are not based around fact. Generally the play of Iggy and its consensus perception is among the top few.

Iginla is on pace for 10 goals.
10 Flames forwards have more.

If Iggy heats up, he might catch Matt Stajan in ppg pace.

This is fact, not narrative.

Based on his last shift, I would like Iginla on the Flames.

I would second this based on the Flames Avs game tonight.

That goal was a beauty vs the Flames.

That would be great to have a hired gun like that in the playoffs.
