Dont make any moves at the deadline for reinforcements, sends a bad message to the team.

If you are a playoff team, you almost have to do something to help your team at the deadline.

Recoup picks in the offseason.

This is the managers job.

Gustafson and Forbort were useful in getting by Winnipeg. With Hamonic opting out and no Gus and Forbort, Flames probably rush Valimaki in and lose a good defenseman in the expansion draft.

You mean the two guys that prevented Michael Stone from being a regular in the playoffs for us? Yeah, really pissed them away

He had maybe his best day today. Getting Zary is a win in itself but it feels like they got 2 x 3 round picks for free. You see in drafts that team that trades down a few times in the 1st round but never the Flames. This year it was great to see the Flames adding picks.

Loved this from the flames. He was the player I was hoping they’d draft... how many pull ups can he do though?

Tree just needs to sign pietro and it’s a slam dunk offseason

I am normally quite negative towards most of Treliving's moves, but I'm very impressed and happy with what happened today.

Very clever. Unlike Columbus/Chicago.

He did well here. I’m not sure there was a fleecing or wizardry involved, but I’d say he got good value for moving back 5 spots.

As a comparable, Feaster moved back 7 spots and got a second rounder, 42 overall. But 14 to 21 was a more critical move back as it was higher in the first round.

You evaluate the picks themselves separately IMO.

They are unrelated. I didn’t like the deadline moves but whether he did that or not, today was solid for him.

You are hilarious. Message received. No more 3rd rounders for players when season could be deleted in an instant because of unforeseen calamities.

So when he negotiates something like this, does he say "you can have our pick for your 3rd, and a promise you don't pick Zary?" Or would that be giving away to the other team who you think is better? What's the honour like amoung GM's?

They will flat out ask the inquiring GM who they are taking.

In this instance, BT would have asked Gorton who he would draft at 19 if they agree to the deal....Gorton answers Schneider and BT has a group of guys that he likes and knows at least 1 will be there at 22 so he says yes.

Then again with McClelland.

Pretty normal stuff actually as there arent a whole lot of secrets as to who is available/ranked in any singular spot. It just comes down to what team likes what player a little bit more than the other.

You know what. I think it is time we give some kudos to our GM who has been a huge target of the fanbase for some time. After missing the playoffs last year he has added

Coleman, Toffoli, Lewis, Gudbransen, Zadorov, Vlader

These players have helped transform this team into one of the toughest to play against in the league. His free agent signings from 2020 Tanev and Markstrom continue to be huge parts of the team. Not selling low on Gaudreau has proved to be a wise call this season.

Bringing in Sutter was the key move that needed to be made but the moves he has made in the last year to build a “Sutter team” needs to be acknowledged and applauded.

So many on this board had written him and the team off completely but Brad has to be in the mix for GM of the year. 3 years later that Hurricanes trade continues to look like a career defining move. Number 1 C and top pairing D remain on this team signed for 2 more years after this and the Hurricanes no longer have any of those players on their roster.

If he can get Gaudreau and Tkachuk signed I think he could be in extension territory. Obviously this team needs a run and a solid summer ahead but we have a team poised to win the Pacific in back to back seasons where 82 games are played.

I agree, in that I love the moves he's made for this year's version of the Flames (in hindsight, at least), but I also can't help but wonder how much influence Sutter had in targeting some of those players. It could have been subtle, like "get me two big D" and Tree chose Gudbranson and Zadorov... or it could have been not so subtle, like "I want Toffoli."

I'm sure a lot of influence. I think it's collaborative. As for Toffoli, he was a pretty obvious target given the Habs' status and the players they had. I imagine Treliving called to see who was available and they narrowed to Toffoli pretty darn quick.

I've been a fan of Tre for the most part, but the last couple of seasons he really had me worried.

His past coaching hires nearly sunk him and this team, bt luckily he has gone and totally redeemed himself.

Already done in another thread. Sutter has been getting a ton of praise about the resilience of the team, but Treliving deserves some credit as well. The moves have Sutter's fingerprints all over them, but Treliving still made them happen.

I was one of the fans who was a supporter for a while but I admittedly was done with Treliving after his summer moves. I did not like the lack of blockbuster trades, replacing Gio with Coleman and Zadorov were not amazing moves at the time in my opinion.

If we lose in round 1 and Johnny walks then I assume the Treliving needs to go thread will stick to the top of the page but I will admit he made some excellent moves including the Toffoli trade that has this team looking like a contender. The rise of Mangiapane and additions of Coleman and Toffoli have somewhat muted the lack of progression of Dube and continued downfall of Monahan. This team looks deep.

All summer we had many on here lamenting the lack of top talent that we needed to tank to get. This team currently has 2 guys in the top 10 in scoring and the best line in hockey. The right coach and the right mix of players show we have that elite talent on our team already.

I declare that Brad Treliving has completely redeemed himself as a GM of the great Flames of Calgary.

Let it no longer be said that Brad's tenure as Flames GM was a story of mediocracy.

I have spoken.
