Funny you mention that. You're not wrong. The Heat are 9th in the AHL in Fenwick Close at 52.6% (
http://chlstats.pythonanywhere.com/home/AHL/). Unfortunately, that's the only team stat of its kind on the web. But it's still a good indicator.
So yeah, they lead the league in shots for per game at 35. Texas is second with 33. It may not seem like it, but that's a very wide margin. The league average is 29.2 shots per game, so the Heat are killing it.
I can tell you from watching the games that they get their fair share of high quality scoring chances as well. It's not like they're just peppering opposing goalies with scatter guns.
Another telling stat is their shooting percentage and PDO. Their shooting percentage is just 7.6% (third last in the league). For comparison's sake, the league average shooting percentage is 9.7%. Imagine if they could pepper the goalie with the same number of shots each game AND shoot two percentage points higher? That'd be the difference from last in the division to competing for first or second in the division.
I don't really like PDO as a measurement of "luck" per say, but it's still a telling stat. When your shooting percentage and save percentages are high, obviously there's going to be success - and the Heat are 25th in the AHL in that category at 97.6.
Anyways, call it a lack of luck or skill or whatever combination thereof, but the Heat are doo doo this year. That's not to say there haven't been bright spots, but the team as a whole has been crap.
