Sorry I guess that was quite vague.
I think it was horrible asset management because we essentially called the player out publically, sent him down and never really brought him back up even when he was doing well in the AHL. I think we are the reason he refused to re-sign. If we dont call him out and give him better higher quality minutes when he did come up, move him up the pecking when he is playing well etc etc.
I think we could have handled Sven the person much better. We handled Sven as a hockey player OK but as a person I dont think we helped by calling him out publically and burying him in the AHL.

No doubt. By definition this is perfect asset management. Something out of nothing (Sven was gone either way). What more do people want?

So a player who didn't want to be here, a team whose younger prospects had already passed him, potential to lose him for nothing after next training camp if he doesn't make the team.
And we got a second for that? I'll take it.
Let's be honest here, Svens most successful stint as a Flame was the 5 games he played in the 2011 season.
Best of luck to him and I hope he turns it around and has a successful career.

Given that others have passed him, it wasn't looking good. And it's not like he at least plays defensively or with energy that he can be brought in at the NHL level to develop. It's top 6 or bust for him.
As another poster mentioned.... both teams acquired unknown commodities today. The Canucks have 9 months to see if theirs will play in the NHL. We have a few years. Both have unfavorable odds though.
I am disappointed that we have to now admit that our 1st rounder from that year did not work out for us, but I am not disappointed with the trade.

Maybe not common or maybe it won't be a long career, but I definitely remember hearing some success stories come from something like this. I think (and not just cause of today, but for a while now) thought that the path back to the NHL would be long for Sven, he always seemed to be a guy who thrived on enthusiasm and confidence, and he went from a very high-high to a very low-low.... at least to me, that seemed like it would be a long road back for him to find his way. Honestly I don' think he'll find it in 20 games plus training camp... I think it'll be longer then that. I think he's got a real good attitude and for that, will find his way to the NHL at some point, but he's so far back at trying to re-define himself, re-discover his scoring touch and get that edge and belief he can score? And do it before October, or else he goes on waivers? ... oh, and someone is offering a 2nd round pick in a deep draft?
For how far back he has to go to really become a NHLer.... a 2nd rounder is pretty good return.

You can't blame the organization when several players who were drafted after Baertschi are playing on the big club and he isn't. He got passed on the depth chart and pouted in the AHL instead of dominating that league and forcing the Flames' hand.

This never happened. At best he was average in the AHL, not the level you hope for a lottery pick.

I agree with that. I just think we could have handled things better. Especially knowing if you ever get a player to the stage where they dont want to resign - you have effectively lowered the value of an asset. Thats all im saying.
Baer didnt take his opportunity. The flames didnt give him a big enough one in my personal opinion.

Jankowski was a terrible pick considering the players that were still available with our original pick and even when we moved down. Also considering his ranking and the fact that he was playing high school hockey. Too much risk for a high pick on a team with basically no prospects at the time. I can live with the Sven pick because the draft wasn't all that good and I don't think there were any players available that really stood out ahead of him. Just unfortunately he didn't pan out. I wonder if we would have transitioned him a bit slower if it would have helped but almost seemed like Baertschi felt he deserved to be up here. Not sure if that was because of expectations management gave him or just his personality.

I think we can all agree that we should stop drafting goofy Euro's with our first round picks and stick to good ol' Canadian boys, eh?!

Good to hear. I'm a little taken back by all the vitriol people are throwing at Baertchi here. Seems kind of unfair. Even if he does have some illusions about what he has to do to make it, I don't feel a need to hold it against him. Especially now that he's just gone.
I hope he has a nice 2-4 year middling NHL career that leaves him with nice memories and a good pile of cash, and then goes away so that we can stop talking about him forever

Always earned..., he simply didn't earn the spot.
I think we have a better drafting program and management that can use the pick to our advantage and it sends a great message to the others

Great trade. If the Flames management have no problem dealing him to a division rival, that shows how much confidence they have in his future. A second round pick for a player who probably will never have a full time job in the NHL is highway robbery in my books.

My question is, what did he do to deserve more ice time? He was injured a few times in his tenure with the Flames. I find it pretty arrogant to be wanting out of an organization at the age of 22. Thank god Backlund didn't pull this garbage when he was having tough times. Earned, never given. His AHL stats weren't that spectacular.
I hope it was a case of him getting bad advice from his agent or something. Seemed like a good kid otherwise. Best of luck to him, but I never was that high on his style of play.

The Flames should have kept him up in the NHL and struggled through his growth with him. That was the only way this was going to work.
Canucks GM Jim Benning already telling the media that he expects Baertschi to play in their Top 6.

13th overall. That's a lottery pick now, any non-playoff team is technically a lottery pick.

I don't find it arrogant at all... in any other industry, LOTS of people do it. In fact, thats the time that matters the most, cause thats your early career development time. Many examples of this, the most obvious one is Kyle Turris.

At the time of the draft, only teams that finished in the bottom 5 could draft first overall.
And even now, the bottom 5 teams have a much higher likelihood.
Baertschi was a mid-first round pick.
And in reality, that should not affect how you view him.
