If the plane was hijacked, why do people keep assuming the passengers will be able to use their cell phones? Obviously the hijackers will confiscate them and remove the batteries/SIM cards.
This story keeps getting weirder and weirder, especially now that it seems the plane was deliberately hiding from detection and flew on in a different direction past the point of last contact. The most likely scenario is the plane is at the bottom of the Indian Ocean IMO. I've read a lot of Internet commenters convinced the plane is at some terrorist compound getting refueled and rigged up with nukes which seems incredibly outlandish but I guess if you told someone in 2000 how 9/11 was going to go down that would have sounded crazy too. Im curious why there isn't more speculation on the first officer, if it was due to the crew I'd be most suspicious of him.
I just thought maybe I had missed a joke/reference there.
I guess less people have watched half baked than I originally suspected

In terms of a terrorist action and wanting the plane, how hard is it to change the identity of the plane. I would assume that each transponder system is unique and fairly tamper proof.
If this was a hijacking and the plane has survived why no ransom demands? Or a political statement of some kind. Earlier on I said that I didn't put much credence into no demands because a smart terrorist group would move assets and personal before making one. Its been a while now, I think the important question to ask is who or what was on the plane?
There was a decent explanation to the cellphones ringing in terms of the first rings are the dialing to the provider and then its attempt to find the phone, if it can't then it goes to voice mail.
If I was a wacky conspiracy nut, my theory would be simple. There was something or someone on that plane that was important or valuable. You had at least a couple of passengers seizing the plane, they then got access to the cockpit, reduced the oxygen into the cabin to put the passengers to sleep, then killed the pilots, set the auto pilot to head out to sea, grabbed what you wanted and parachuted out of the back of the plane.
the plane flew for 5 hours which explains the pings and engine diagnostic reports, then when it ran out of fuel it plunged into the ocean. Meanwhile the hi-jackers are sitting on a boat somewhere.
But that's a crazy scenario, just like finding a 5000 foot runway and landing the plane

^ Jumping out the back mid flight sounds like a great plan, but good luck getting the door open. Might be able to pop the emergency exit Windows but I don't think the door is opening at all.

Even if you did, wouldn't you just basically die? I have looked at the outside temperature during the flights - isn't it about -80 or something?
I think it's basically anything over 35,000 feet. However, you need pretty specialized equipment for HALO jumps, not sure how you would get that on a plane.

Military guys would know the specifics, but it depends on the air defense of the territory you are jumping into. HALO works by flying over an enemy air defense coverage to insert your troops on the ground. I would imagine that would mean above commercial airline elevation, so maybe 40k+?
Keep in mind, soldiers who do this have special equipment and oxygen.
While HALO may sound sexy, special operation soldiers will typically insert by HAHO (high attitude, high opening) as the advantage is that the transport can stay in friendly airspace and the operators can float into the insertion zone undetected.

I like your theory!
Anyone know if the airport saves the security scans of the checked and carry on baggage? If yes, I surely hope someone has been reviewing them for any abnormalities...
