Lets say that his contract runs dry THIS season. We offer Colorado our 1st and 3rd picks for him.. They laugh at us.

If Colorado hasn't matched this offer by Saturday night, I'd consider him a Calgary Flame.
Just my opinion.

We should probably know in a day or two what the Avs will do. If they match, they will do it ASAP to get the guy in their lineup. If they don't, they will wait the full 7 days to make the Flames squirm, and make sure we don't have him in the lineup helping us win (and hurting their draft pick).

I understand why they did it, in order to try and force the Avs not to match
but this is no different than what Edmonton did to Penner, which a lot of people here then complained here rightfully so set the standard for RFA deals which caused a bunch of inflated bloated contracts

I think a fair comparison for what he could become is Ryan Kesler (without the diving) and a little less offense. If he signs a long term deal after this one around the 4.5-5M range I think that is where he belongs then this is a good trade. Anything more than that and I don't think he will have the offense to justify the contract (I hope he proves me wrong, be it on the Avalanche or on the Flames). And to add, I personally think that a cap hit of 5M is too much for him right now
|
If you think he can be Ryan Kesler, you have a duty to go get him. Maybe he doesn't get 8/48, but you cannot win without centres of his calibre. So pay the man. If any position needs an organizational cap, it's the wingers. No winger should be making more than 4.5-5m. Give the money to the centres, and let them do their thing. That's what the good teams do.

We get him now, we get him long term.
|
Assuming he puts up what? 65 points a season? He'll have to score that to justify $6 million per.
In that case I don't think he would be afraid of going to UFA if the Flames don't match his QO.
Why wouldn't he gamble? He gambled by holding out and going to Russia rather then signing an NHL contract. He wanted $5 million for a 55 point season. If he manages to score more then that, it will just inflate his self worth.
The Flames are almost certainly going to be overpaying O'Reilly for as long as he stays in Calgary if the Avs don't match.
The best case scenario is basically that O'Reilly is only 1-2 million overpaid.
What if he doesn't live up to the expectations? What are the Flames going to do if he drops to 50 points and the $6.8 QO is laying on the table? They either have to sign that, or agree to a massive overpayment, or let him walk. Those are all bad spots to be in.

Why would the Avs match? They didn't want to pay O'Reilly that much in the first place.

I just hope they recoup a first round pick somehow. Draft day is so boring without one.

With O Reilly i can't see flames finishing in the bottom 5.
My only concern is if the flames waited to long to do this? If done 2 weeks ago could have had a couple of more wins against easy teams. Flames going into a very hard part of the schedule followed by 9 games in April on the road.
The good part is that after tonights game he only misses the canucks game. He should be eligible for the Wednesday game against the sharks.

He has three seasons under his belt at 22 years old, last year putting up 50+ points, leading the league in take-aways, and was 54% in faceoffs.
"Insane" signing a player like that to a 5 million dollar cap hit.
Um, no. Poor choice of words.

Okay, here's a couple recent ones:

With the timing, I doubt the Avs match

The general attitude seems to be that he is "proven". Lots of players have had a good year or two and then regressed. Usually they end up in a Flames jersey at the point too

Exactly.
i wanted no part of trading guys like Backlund and Gaudreau to get him, the only way I was interested was via offer sheet. But I didn't think there was any way that Colorado wouldn't match. Until I saw Feaster's brilliant play (well haven't actually seen it, but...)
I think there is a real chance that they dn't match.
And anyone that thinks this team will finish bottom 5 with O'Reilly, Backlund and (the new and improved) Stajan down the middle, along with Kipper and a real backup between the pipes, well I'll agree to disagree with you
