Jake Long signs with the Rams. Not much of a surprise as the Fins were playing hardball with him.

I expect to see Vollmer & Andre Smith to sign short term deals in the near future. Wish the Colts would have signed Smith instead of Cherilus but they must see something I don't.

NFL Annual Meetings in Arizona this week. Items on table:

Here is a breakdown of the rule changes and bylaws to be voted on, in simple terms:

Proposal 1 -- This is specific to the Jim Schawartz challenge in the Lions-Texans Thanksgiving game, when Schwartz threw a challenge flag on a scoring play, which isn't allowed and thus eliminated the ability for officials to review the play. If it happens under the proposed rule, the play would be allowed to be reviewed.

Proposal 2 -- A safety-based proposal which would essentially restrict teams from being able to overload a side on P.A.T. and field-goal block situations (no more than 6 players can align on either side of the snapper).

Proposal 3 -- Eliminating the tuck rule.

Proposal 4 -- Allowing tight ends/H-backs to wear jerseys with numbers 40 to 49. They are currently restricted to 80-89 (unless none are available).

Proposal 5 -- Another safety-related proposal on peel back blocks, making them illegal whether inside or outside the tackle box.

Proposal 6 -- Another safety-related proposal which would make it a penalty if a runner or tackler initiates forcible contact by delivering a blow with the top crown of his helmet against an opponent when both players are clearly outside of the tackle box.

Bylaw 1 -- Altering the waiver-wire rules, where a player claimed on waivers would only have to be on the roster for one day, instead of two, before a transaction could be made.

Bylaw 2 -- Expanding the window to "start the clock" on players placed on the active/physically unable to perform list from weeks 6-9 to 6-11.

Bylaw 3 -- With this year's season-opening game set for a Wednesday, making the roster cuts to 53 on Friday night instead of Saturday.

I find this proposal assinine. I understand they are trying to eliminate all head/neck injuries as possible, but this rule would fundamentally change the way the game is and has been played for 100 years.

Runners (or even WR/TE who catch the ball) have always been taught to move forward when getting tackled, and lowering the head is really the only way to do that.

Just seems like there is no way to properly make something like this practical.

No way Dumerville ends up back in Denver unless he accepts about 5 million less than he was to receive AFTER taking a pay cut...at least thats how i read the situation.

Why is this even a rule? what's the purpose?

To help officials identify eligible/non-eligible receivers on any given play.

Might be the silliest rule every created. This is almost like telling hockey players to not use their arms to make a body check.

Adrian Peterson might end up being the most penalized player in the league now.

I kind of feel bad for the league. They're damned if they do, damned if they don't.

They are taking all sorts of shorts for these proposed rule changes. But on the other side they are being sued by retired players for not doing enough to protect them.

It had become a very fine line; the healthy players claim they know and accept the risks, the retired players claim they don't get enough compensation for the risks they took and are looking for legal remedies.

Great signing by the rams to solidify the tackle spot. When healthy long is a top left tackle. With him and roger as bookends on the line we can use a pick to shore up the interior of the line and get a receiver with the other pick the rams will be locked and loaded.

Is this a joke? I get the Orioles team plays in Cleveland the night before and that's likely a reason they ain't moving there game, but come on everyone in the Orioles organization had best go check out how many Ravens fans showed up for that Superbowl parade. This might not go over well with anyone in the city of Baltimore if they have to open their season on the road. How hard is it to move your game to say a Saturday afternoon/night doubleheader?

Quote:
The Ravens and Orioles have not been able to resolve a scheduling conflict that could force the Ravens onto the road for their Thursday Night Football season-opening game, per a league source.

The opener would be scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 5, but the Baltimore Orioles, who play next door and share parking lots, also have a game slated for that night at 7:05 p.m. versus the Chicago White Sox.

One option the league considered was for the Ravens to play on Wednesday night, but decided against it because that's the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah.

The other option for Thursday night would be that the Orioles would move their game time.

The league source said the “least desirable” option for the Ravens to open on the road. The Ravens' road games are at Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Buffalo, Chicago, Miami, Denver and Detroit.

The Ravens’ opponent is expected to be announced Monday at the NFL owners meetings, but the conflict could delay the process. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to speak on the subject with the media later today.

I don't think they can't move to a doubleheader without player approval. I'm not certain, but I remember there being issues with that when the Yankees had a bunch of rain out games to make up last year.

Not exactly great for the ratings when your biggest regular season game is played on a day where a sizeable portion of the audience won't be able to watch.

Of course you can't play on Rosh Hashanah, the Jews rule the world after all, so playing on their holidays is not acceptable /somethingmikeytheredneckwouldsay

In seriousness, the Orioles just started earning back some of their fan base with last years run, last thing you wanna be doing is pissing off Baltimore sports fans. Peter Angelos is hated enough.

If you can play on Christmas, you can play on any day. Honestly Ravens should be the one to move their game to a different date considering the MLB schedule was set prior to Ravens winning the Super Bowl.

You got Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Pick a day.

This may be interesting to some. The NFL has settled a case brought by former players over the use of their likenesses in promotional materials (mostly NFL Films) for $42 million. Possibly indicates a new era in the leagues relationship with its former players.
