Most people do, just not some of the fanboys because Abrams did not make the version they were hoping for. Abrams himself did not like Star Trek growing up, and I don't think fans appreciated that. They'd prefer Worf to be singing opera music, or Data to be screwing with his emotion chip.
But to call him a hack like Brett Ratner is just silly. He might be a tad mainstream, but that does not make him a hack.

I'm far from a Trek fan boy. I mean, I liked the Next Generation but go through my previous Trek posts.. I haven't seen any of the original Trek show and some of the movies.
If that makes it easier for you to brush aside my valid and correct criticisms though, then more power to you.

I loved the latest Star Treks. I think Mastodon is in the minority.
I don't think I've ever said I wasn't, to be fair. To be honest it's not just Abrams I didn't like about Trek. Karl Urban, an actor who I really like, is horrible as bones. He did a bad job in the first one and continued it in the 2nd. Unlike Zachary Quinto who really owned his role and made it his own, Urban is more doing a parody of the original Bones.
It's a fine line between making it your own and parody though. Quinto nailed it and Urban didn't.
I liked the first Abrams Star Trek (haven't seen Into Darkness) because I'm not a Trekkie and I don't care. I have Trekkie friends who hate it, but that's mostly a timeline thing I think as opposed to a style thing.
I am ok with what he did with Star Trek, I just wish he didn't have them both. I'm also still a little bitter than LOST was such a unguided #### rocket for so many episodes.

No, he's not. Abrams et al ran into the same mistake John Logan did with Nemesis. Star Trek II is Star Trek II. Don't try to rip it off, just do something new and unique.

I now have the feeling this movie will suck. So much has to come together in order for it to be executed properly.
For Star Wars it doesn't even really matter at this point. The mythology and awesomeness was already destroyed by its creator, it can't suck any more than it already has.

JJ didn't write all that embarrassing fan service KHAAAAAAAAN junk into the last movie did he? how much of Into Darkness' failings can you put on the director?
my belief has always been that he's a skilled director, or at least a very good mimic of the Spielberg school of audience manipulation. but he's not good enough to overcome a bad screenplay, which he seems to attract with bizarre regularity.
contrast that with good old George, who was director, writer, caterer, etc. and you end up with the so-bad-it's-bad prequels. with JJ at the helm you have at least half the equation fixed, but if the story and dialogue are nonsensical eff-poop again, well it's screwed no matter what.

Abrams was also a producer on both films. He had a tonne of input on all aspects of both films. He didn't write the scripts but he approved them.
Zac Efron and Ryan Gosling are rumored to be up for parts.
I have a hard time seeing Gosling in a movie like Star Wars (or any sci-fi for that matter)
He's filming Logan's Run right now I believe, so we'd get an idea in advance at how well he'd work in a real science fiction movie. Although right now I wold tend to agree with you he may not suit the role; however Gosling could play a deaf mute, with no arms or hands for the movie and still be an improvement over Hayden Christensen in the last trilogy.
