The Reserve Force is an integral component of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), and Reservists are vital links to hundreds of communities across Canada. They come from all walks of life, including civil servants, labourers, business people, academics, and former Regular Force members.
Their varied skills and backgrounds enrich and strengthen the CAF
Recruitment procedures will be dramatically improved and remuneration and benefits will be better aligned with those of the Regular Force, where the demands and service are similar.
We will:
Increase the size of the Reserve Force to 30,000 (an increase of 1,500) and reduce the initial recruitment process from a number of months to a matter of weeks;
Assign Reserve Force units and formations additional roles that provide full-time capability to the CAF through part-time service, including:
Light Urban Search and Rescue;
Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defence;
Combat capabilities such as direct fire, mortar, and pioneer platoons;
Cyber operators and intelligence operators;
Naval Security Teams; and
Linguistics.
Enhance existing roles assigned to Reserve Force and formations including:
Information Operations including Influence Activities;
Combat Support and Combat Service Support; and
Air Operations Support Technicians.
Employ the Reserve Force to deliver select deployed missions in a primary role such as CAF capacity building;
Create an agile service model that supports the transition between full and part-time service and provides the flexibility to cater to different Reserve Force career paths;
Align Primary Reserve Force remuneration and benefits with those of the Regular Force where the demands of service are similar;
Revise annuitant employment regulations to attract and retain more former Regular Force personnel to the Reserves. This will help encourage people who are departing the Regular Force to join the Reserves rather than leave the Forces altogether;
Offer full-time summer employment to Reservists in their first four years with the Reserves commencing in 2018; and
Work with partners in the Federal Government to align Federal Acts governing job protection legislation. Subsequently, we will work with provinces and territories to harmonize job protection for Reserves at that level.

About time. From people I've talked to the recruitment process was a bit of a nightmare.
In regards to the fighter jets, does anyone else think the Liberals are just trying to save face by making it seem like there will be an open competition, and will just buy the F-35s anyways?
Politically they have to milk their 'stand' to the very end.
I would expect that there will be a poison pen in any bid process based around longevity, 5th generation features and seemless data integration with Norad and NATO that will kill the European jets.

speede - is the ground handling equipment largely the same? I understood this is part of the rationle for the Supers - yes it is a different airplane, but both are designed to work on a carrier deck and similar enough that there would be some cost savings.
It also fits in our existing hangers/shelters and compatible with our probe and drogue system...?
Not completely sold on this, but I think a reasonable (albeit expensive) hedge, in particular if we were to acquire the Block III version just approved by the US Navy.
I don't know much about the gse. Honestly the cost of enough gse to handle a fleet in two locations would not be a deal breaker for any aircraft purchase, nor would it be enough to eliminate a contender. Some gse is common and can be used on multiple aircraft, towbars, power units, etc.
Hangars shouldn't be an issue, they fit in ours, you might get one or two less in a hangar because they are a bigger.
I know lots of guys who work and fly hornets but haven't done anything more than tow one around myself. Still kick myself for not taking a ride while I was in. haha.

Either the Sonar operator was asleep, the Captain of the sub was asleep. Or worse, the sonar operator couldn't hear the Orca.
How they couldn't hear it coming was my first thought too. Found another article that said the sub was docked though. Guess that makes a lot more sense
Remember the front end of the boat is called the bow, the backend is called the stern, the left side is Port the right Starboard. That steering wheel, if you turn it left the boat goes left, if you turn it right the boat goes right.
but be careful, there are no wheels on the bottom of the boat so you have no brakes.

Canadian elite special forces sniper sets record-breaking kill shot in Iraq
Quote:
A sniper with Canada’s elite special forces in Iraq has shattered the world record for the longest confirmed kill shot in military history at a staggering distance of 3,450 metres.
Sources say a member of Joint Task Force 2 killed an Islamic State insurgent with a McMillan TAC-50 sniper rifle while firing from a high-rise during an operation that took place within the last month in Iraq. It took under 10 seconds to hit the target.
