Looks like yet another fire at the Daiichi plant. Cant be good news, and those poor workers have to be just about at the end of their ropes so to speak.

OK...can someone in Japan verify what CNN is reporting?
they are saying that those 50 workers have abandoned the entire plant and cannot continue to try and control what is going on.
If true....horrible news.

Maybe this is a silly question, when I think nuclear explosion I think mushroom cloud, is there any potential for this to occur here. Haven't heard any media mention this but understand that the Japanese gov. doesn't want a mass exodus that will kill their economy.

Mr Edano, Japan's chief government spokesman, says workers trying to douse the reactors with water were forced to retreat when radiation levels surged there.

Thats extremely worrisome, not as much from a radiation standpoint as a runaway nuclear reaction standpoint.

according to reuters the spokesman also said that Reactor 4 is not realistic to reach criticality (which I guess makes some sort of sense as the fuel is spent).

Government spokesman Yukio Edano told reporters that radiation levels at the plant had risen rapidly on Wednesday morning, and that workers had to be withdrawn.
The reactor had been shut down before the quake for maintenance, but its spent fuel rods were still stored on the site.
Kyodo news agency says the storage pool may be boiling and further radiation leaks are feared.

Nuclear reaction should not run away with the control rods present from my understanding. That reaction was shut down the instant the earthquake hit. What they were trying to control was the heat given off from the fission products which continue to breakdown and release energy.

The workers have left.
What I am wondering is why the sudden spike in radiation to the point they had to flee?
breach in containment areas?

I strongly doubt it. I'm sure there is some trade in a radiation suit working his ass off.

Not good. Way more material in those heating pools than Chernobyl ever had. Worker abandoning the plant means all is lost.

if it's morning i'd guess it was because of the spent rods.....sounded like the water was going quick
EDIT: also read that a few hours ago there was lots of white smoke which could be the water boiling+evaporating while heating up rapidly?

Radiation in Tokyo 20x normal according to CNN. Anyone still think this isn't a big deal?

Now they are saying that the workers are being allowed back in to the plant after 45 minutes.
Now I have no idea for sure, but I cannot believe that radiation levels high enough to warrant an evacuation and suspension of operations can dissipate enough to safe levels that quickly.
I am becoming very very wary of the information being put out by the government and/or the power company.
