I think that a 6 would work though and it has a good amount of backbone.

Sweet, we are going to give it a shot this weekend. Hopefully the weather stays warm for the weekend! And I don't have a very expensive rod, so I am not too worried if I get a fish large enough to break it, that will be a great story!!

Look for the warmer bays and there should be pike there. Ideally you would have a thermometer and the temperature would be around 20 celcius and they should be quite active. But, try out some top water, big chunky streamers and enjoy!
Really, you shouldn't break your rod. It can happen, but you shouldn't have to have that kind of pressure on them. Just let them run and play them a bit and you should be fine. My fishing buddy landed a 20" Rainbow on a 3wt last year. It was kind of touch and go for a spell, but it worked out!
(And if you do break your rod, I know a local guy who has a thread in the Power Ring who could get you a new one )

You could tag along with Troutman and I this summer if you're interested. I have extra rods and reels and such and all you need to bring is lunch. You'll almost certainly catch fish, and the price is right!

Let's do this. I have an extra rod and reel too.
We might have to blindfold IFF, before we lead him to the special waters.

I'm heading up to Ribbon Lake for some camping. Has anyone ever fly fished cutties there (or any other mountain lake from the shore)? What works? I'm probably not going to bring my waders and boots as it's a decent hike in/out and I'm already packing in a bunch of stuff.

Been a long time since I've been up to any high-country lakes, but in the past I have had great success with yellow humpies (14-16), or smaller elk hair caddis (16), and old faithful yellow/orange stimulators (12-14). If the cutties are small (typical in most high-country lakes), you will need to use smaller than above.

Long time since I been at Ribbon Lake. Seem to remember small fish up there. Fortress Lake has a better reputation I think. Any dry flies should work - these fish have to eat before the lake freezes again.

I don't have high hopes to catch anything significant but simply casting in the mountains is a pretty good consolation prize.

With luck, those fish have barely seen anyone and almost any fly will work! (Which isn't really a stretch, and those days are the best fishing for a lot of reasons)

I fished Winchell Lake recently. Didn't catch anything. Nice place though.

Ribbon Lake update: Caught a couple little cutties (~8-9") with size 16 brown elk hair caddis flies. Not crazy fishing but I'm stoked with the two since I usually have terrible luck in the high altitude lakes.
Oh, and the hikes in/out are ok too.

Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation for me. Taking a zodiac out tomorrow for a little fishing. Was thinking of hitting up either Spray Lakes or Upper Kananaskis. Anyone had good luck at either of these spots or have another suggestion? Typically I fish down in the crowsnest area and never use a boat so tomorrow will be a change.

I think I saw Slava on his bike blow by me between lanes of traffic, wearing a fishing vest and had a fly rod with him
I just got into fly fishing this year and went out yesterday to a little stream and got this guy.
I had him back in the water in seconds, but I've decided getting a net is the next thing on the list.

^ Nice fish! When you get a net I would suggest one that is rubber like the one in the pics in troutmans post. I don't know if you can buy other kinds at this point, but those rubber nets are great for a few reasons. One is that its easy on the fish. Another is that your hook doesn't get caught in the webbing. For a good one it's not super cheap, but you hope to use this a lot!
Also, spend a little extra and get yourself a magnetic net release. I know this is a shameless plug, but you can buy one here: https://secretcreekflyfishing.com/pr...ic-net-release
And you know a guy who can give you a CP discount!
(I gave up the vest for a backpack which is the best trade-off ever, so that wasn't me!)
