I think pretty much all of those who voted no are pro-secondary suite; they don't want to put it off that long and don't want the expense of a plebiscite.

The motion that passed wasn't to have a plebiscite, but rather to study having a plebiscite.

How costly is it to add a plebiscite to a planned election? It seems like really the only extra cost would be printing the ballots, and a bit of extra time for counting...

Things that cost money when you have to do hundreds of thousands of them.

You also have to:
Determine the question to be asked (exact wording)
Educate the public on the issue (significant cost)

And even then, a plebiscite from council isn't binding. All you accomplish is an accurate survey.

Just go off of the existing surveys that show that Calgary is significantly in favour of allowing secondary suites in all zones.

Sounds good to me. I think it makes sense to allow secondary suites everywhere (in terms of zoning) and then really crack down on illegal suites that are unsafe or don't have the required parking.

The idea was that a plebiscite could save money, but really all you do is add the cost of running the plebiscite on top of the cost of the education. All the money in the world spend on educating the public isn't going to make a plebiscite a more educated decision than letting council make a decision.

I must be missing something. If the city is going to spend all kinds of money to educate me to vote yes, then why would we go through the exercise?

I am starting to feel like the city is wasting more and more money...coincidentally taxes are really starting to rise.

It costs a lot less to educate 15 members of council than trying to present the idea to a million residents.

The council of 15 will always make a more educated decision as well.

I'm just annoyed that they have nothing else to talk about. We just finished with secondary suites and now we're spending a bunch of money to examine it some more. All this on an issue that I'm convinced the vast majority (a) doesn't understand and (b) doesn't really care about.

We already had a plebiscite on secondary suites... and we elected Nenshi. Wish the other council members would respect that unless they explicitly campaigned for a plebiscite, he has a mandate that they don't.

Makes no sense that we'd get rid of fluoride without a plebiscite (despite the population being in favour of keeping it when it was voted on) but can't implement legalizing secondary suites without one (despite the city electing the guy who was in favour of it).

Let's not start that kind of reasoning. When a politician at any level gets elected it means just that: they we're elected. It doesn't mean that every plank of their platform is approved by voters.
