Self Checkout is a self-affirmation event for me. I size up the three other contestants, make a mental note of approximately how many items they have, and how many items head start I've ceded to them.... and then I proceed to rip it up.

It's a rare day in Co-Op land when someone beats me out of the self-checkout aisle.

LOL. I remember back in the day, I'd always look for a male cashier. I bought one of the economy sized boxes. The guy laughs, looks at me and says "Busy weekend planned?"

Who thought that having 5 of your cashiers running a 10 items or less line was smart? especially when they only have 3 or 4 other cashiers running the bigger lines. Maybe it's just the Marlborough one but it's just stupid.

Now when I go to Wal-mart I try to keep my items under 10 items or else I'll be waiting in line for an hour. Dumb business move and I can imagine other people doing the same thing.
You kidding? At my closest Wal Mart, the opposite problem exists: They removed the four self-checkout lanes and put in that bay with ten express lanes, of which I have NEVER seen more than one or two people working. Walmart basically reduced their ability to serve express customers by 50-75% and by forcing an employee off the regular tills and into that second express lane from time to time, has found a way to slow everybody down.

Because there's a lineup out the door of people that want to work 20 hour work weeks and late nights for eight bucks an hour. The only time I go to a cashier checkout anymore is if there's some odd item, I'm missing a SKU, or I need a raincheck or something. My only gripe is that stores need a dedicated person watching the self checkouts. I hate when you get the "see attendant" error and there's no attendant to be found.

Not kidding at all. If your closest Wal-Mart isn't the Marlborough one you are a lucky man. It is the busiest in Calgary and one of the busiest in Western Canada.

If it was I'd drive the extra 10 minutes to get to another one.

I'd imagine the "cheapest" aspect and the "horribly run" aspect are significantly correlated.

It shouldn't be. I was at the Red Deer Wal-Mart not to long ago and it was run pretty good. It wasn't as busy, but I think they had more cashiers than the Marlborough one would have at the busiest times.

Next closest one is 20 minutes away and its the one by 130th Ave....not really convenient to drive 40 minutes to save 15 minutes in the line up.

I hate Wal-Mart. Refuse to shop there.

I prefer a cashier to self-serve at Safeway.

So let me get this straight...

You are concerned about local jobs being lost yet you are shopping at a big-box retailer?

Have I been Poe'd?

You'd actually be driving 40 minutes for a less crowded store, a much less dumpy store, AND to save 15 mins in the lineup. As far as the Deerfoot Mall store, I find that one pretty good. I stop there on the way to work occasionally.

Self checkouts are great, when you only have a few items.

IKEA has them too, and I think that lineups there are significantly shorter now.

Self checkouts are like pay-at-the-pump stations. Most of them work flawlessly, until you get that one at that one store you rarely go to, and it's all different than the others, it wants your payment card and THEN your points card, the buttons are all out of whack, it aborts the sale if the weight is off, (for no reason), then you scan something and the screen flashes "please wait for assistance" and the only assistance is some kid kickin' it against the window ledge texting his buddies who has zero desire in helping anyone out. And when he finally does, he begrudgingly enters a 200-key password and sighs before returning to his post.

And all you wanted was 300g of stupid lunch meat. dammit.
