You could further that argument with the insight that the governmental system at the time changed religion for the worse, not the other way around.

True, I would agree with that. Remember that Henry VIII basically created his own religion so that he could continue to divorce and behead his wives.

There were some hideously corrupt religious figures in that time that had the ears of royalty, but you have to ask yourself, were these figures following the religous tenants or were they subverting it to their means.

As much as I would like to see a world without religion, it would probably turn into the Go God Go episode of South Park.
