Spend what you can afford. You can get a darn nice ring at almost any price point. Just look around and find out what she likes. Don't go in debt - that's not the right way to start a marriage.

Spent $1200 (6 years ago), and the wife loved it and doesn't want to add band(s) to it. I think it depends on the girl - but be leery of a girl for whom it is a hangup.

A nice ring won't make you feel any better when you're hungry - especially so if you're going to school or still young. It is a symbol - and that's it. To each their own.

Do people still do the ring getting passed down from generation to generation thing?
Like you guys would give your bride your grandmother's ring, or something like that?

I've got a beautiful ring I'll sell you for $4,000. Insurance assessment was $15,000.

3 diamonds. Platinum band. Size 6 I think.

Doh, I guess that's the price you pay for freedom. Looks like you made the right decision though.

I bought my wife a canadian diamond. It was smaller then what most of our friends were buying at the time but I could always say there is no doubt where it came from and too this day we both are happy we did. I just purchased a 10 year anniversary for her that was a past, present and future ring. My advice keep it simple, then use the remaining money for house, wedding or vacation and commit to the larger more expensive later on. You will both find that the more simple ring combined with enhanced memories was better then just a larger more sparkly ring and nothing else.

PS.. Ben Moss is the best for customer service, maximizing uniquiness on budget and overall care for it's clients. Just my experience.

The diamond industry is one huge scam. I tried to explain the economics to a friend of mine and all she heard was that I was cheap. It's a scam but it's an effective one.

I hate diamonds. Hate seeing them, and especially hated buying one. I also bought a Canadian diamond, got the higher clarity or whatever that deal is, so it's smaller but nicer. My wife still wears the ring, so I guess she liked it. I spent 1750 but that was 6 years ago, and gold's a lot more expensive now. You can get any reputable jeweller to make a ring you like; so shop around with your soon-to-be-fiancee and get their idea of what they like (style, white vs yellow gold, mounting, etc).

Two huge pieces of advice:

1) Get the best diamond you want to pay for. The jeweller will tell you you can replace it with a bigger one whenever; your fiancee/wife won't ever replace it. It's the engagement ring you bought, so buy the best you want to get.

2) Learn the diamond quality rankings. That way you aren't a sucker when you go into the store. And trust me, a lot of stores treat you as a sucker! Size isn't everything (that's not what she said!) - cut, colour, clarity are all equally important when it comes to price.

I also love the idea of the diamond company telling you how much to spend. Come on. Does anyone go to a used car dealership as ask how much they should spend on a car?

The day I spend 3 months of my salary on a ring i hope I get killed in a car accident.

Stupid, stupid thing, the engagement ring. If you love her, and you'll love her all your life, it shouldn't matter the size or cost of a rock on her finger. Such a silly concept.

I was never happy with anything I found in the stores, so I gave designing a custom ring a shot.

I ended up going to "Liberty Custom Goldworks Inc" with a sketch and a few pictures of rings that I liked and the final product was amazing. I would highly recommend checking them out. I ended up with a bigger, better stone than I was looking at in the stores as well as saving a bunch of money (which is always nice) plus a unique ring designed with my fiancee in mind.

Especially if you have a good idea of what you're looking for, I really cant recommend them enough. I'll be going back there for our wedding bands.

I heard about this place from one of the big jewlery stores (Can't remember which one... its in all the malls, starts with an M... I suck). They didn't have anything I was looking for, so the guy hinted I should check this place out. I guess Liberty does all their goldsmithing and setting work.

(Im no way affiliated with this place, but they went the extra mile to make sure I ended up with the perfect ring so Im plugging them every chance I get)

Hey guys

I just bought mine so all of this stuff is still fresh in my head

- There is no hard and fast rule about buying a ring. Spend as much as you are comfortable with. There is no reason to go into debt as you still have to plan a wedding
- The most important decision you'll need to make off the bat. Carat or Cut (or for those where money is no matter, than do both). Carat size is by weight, not size. The better the cut, the more "sparkle" the diamond appears. A well cut diamond will look bigger and better than a large carat diamond with an inferior cut. For me, I got the best cut diamond I could and reduce the carat size to .8
- Do your research before you shop. Get a minimum standard for all 4 qualities. For me, I wanted an ideal cut (excellent grade) or higher, F colour (the first category of "Colourless"), VS2 (will need 10x and a trained eye to see any inclusions), and no less than 0.75 carat.
- Naturally, the more higher qualities you seek, the price goes up. Find what qualities you can sacrifice to make it more affordable
- Canadian diamonds will have a markup compared to diamonds coming from else where. The advantage is that Canadian diamonds are laser inscribed so it gives people the confidence that it is not a blood diamond or something shady
- I bought my diamond from Brilliant earth, and online store. Very good service, and their company promotes itself as a environmentally friendly diamond company (my fiance is very into that). http://www.brilliantearth.com/
- Mine came to be about $8k (damn Ontario taxes) but appraised for almost 17k

Hope that helps

Why is every ring ever bought appraised for way more than it's worth?
