Selfishly, I would love to have Etihad and Emirates give me direct flights there. And throughout my adult life I've absolutely loathed Air Canada for a number of reasons, although flying Lufthansa has raised my opinion of AC. I'd be a happy guy if the Canadian government reconsidered. But I admit I don't know or understand all the issues so I'll step aside and let those that do continue the discussion.

But you should know that the UAE's women are treated JUST FINE. This is not Iran or Pakistan we're talking about.
The UAE's highest judicial body says a man can beat his wife and young children as long as the beating leaves no physical marks.

Have you been there? I really had no intention of changing your mind, but the UAE is an amazing country to visit and it's a shame that people wouldn't go because of the half-truths and non-factors you cite.
My dad has been there and my co-worker worked there and Dubai is a terrible place.

Their government is corrupt and one of the Prince's is in jail for torturing someone, I saw the video. The Prince put sand in the guys mouth and then ran him over 9 times with a Range Rover because the guy "stole some rice" which was a misunderstanding.

Well that settles it! Close the thread!

Arabs make poor allies, it would seem.

IMO that would be appropriate counter action to what the UAE has done, the only negative would be if the UAE put pressure on Turkey to do the same thing to Canada. Refusing fly over rights would essentially kill 2 the two LAX and SFO flights and make the IAH and JFK much less profitable.

It's a big issue because they need so much labour and folks from nearby countries flock there for work. In the early days of the boom, it was easy for companies to exploit workers. People weren't being paid, being paid miniscule amounts, their passports and visas were being confiscated, etc. But the UAE government has been addressing this and some measures have been implemented. Every employee must now have a local bank account into which they are paid and this is monitored by the labour dept to ensure payment is being made. Every employee has a labour card which helps them track who is working in the UAE and for who.

Of course this doesn't include the "casual labour" market, which consists of illegals that work under the table. I'm not exactly sure what the government's approach on that is, as it doesn't really affect me, but it's a problem many countries face, including the USA with the illegal Mexicans.

Quoted for truth. Sand suckers with a backwards religion and treatment of woman. It's like the dark ages over there and we don't need their shady business practices in Canada

Well that's disappointing to read.

Based on the people I have interacted with over there, "wife discipline" doesn't seem to be commonplace. But I think we all agree there's no place for that type of thing in this world.

There seems to have been a lot of rhetoric and BS thrown around in this "dispute." Even though it isn't over yet, I just assumed Canada would eventually cave and come to some BS agreement.

Having said that, I like this article. Nothing earth shattering, but a less diplomatic opinion from everyone's favorite Beatles singing Prime Minister.
