They're not pulling out. Way I understand it is that major combat operations are ending, but SF troops are still going to stay to help kill terrorists.

Outside of that the US is going to be actively involved in Iraq for years to come, and will probably setup military bases similar to Rammstein in Germany.

From my understanding the U.S. troops will no longer be going into the field on patrols, doing house entrance and searches man road blocks etc.

For the most part they're going to be training incoming soldiers and cops.

It will be up to Iraqi forces to maintain their security and kill terrorists.

I agree there will always be a U.S. precence, but you're probably not going to be seeing large bases staffed by military formations. More along the lines of logistics and information gathering bases.

I don't see the Iraqi's being able to police themselves. 50,000 support personnel and SF are not going to be able to do it, and they shouldn't have to because that's not their job.

It's not the military's job either, but their the only force that actually have a chance at success.

They've been doing it for a while now. One combat brigade doesn't make the whole country secure.

Plus, the Brits have handed over a lot of their major operating areas to the Iraq Government as well, and that seemed to go well.
