So many speed traps and confusion in this city. Wonder how many people are actually getting caught for speeding rather than making an honest mistake. The CPS must be funding itself by now.

Also, why do we have to slow down to 80 in a 100km/h zone when there is no work or workers present just some orange barrels along the shoulder?

Extactly! Finally someone on CP who agrees. And why does the government say I cant drive and tell me when Ive had too many drinks before driving. I mean, alocohol limit is based on tolerenece, not the number of drinks in my blood.

Same goes for those red light cameras, how are they to tell exactly when it went read? BAsically a money grabbing joke.

And dont get me started on that dumb liberal gun registry

or restlin

Well for schools that start in a few days the school year starts....in a few days, not in September.

I agree with one zone. I don't agree with speeding when it's possible for kids to be around, distracted with playing, etc.

^^^Well you know, 1 km/h is the difference between life and death. Not that guy weaving in and out of traffic on the Deerfoot.

Except that comment actually had some merit... a row of text is smaller than a flag being flown at any school in Calgary.

Separating Playground and School zones is stupid.......more rules to remember/follow that don't really need to exist.
There are plenty of schools that are completely deserted in the summer time. I drive past two of them every day, and they are Elementary schools.

In the mid-90s, Medicine Hat made every school zone into playground zones (I don't know if this is still the case) and it was completely ridiculous to drive past a high school on a Saturday afternoon where there wasn't a piece of playground equipment or a child anywhere in sight and be required to slow down to 30km/h.

There should be very specific rules about the placement of school and playground zones. If a school has a playground that kids frequent, then it should be a playground zone. If the street in front of the school is only used for student access to the school, it should be a school zone. If there is an adequate fence around the school yard or playground that does not have an access point to or from the road, there should not be any additional speed controls.

Most importantly, however, a playground zone should require the presence of a playground. For example, this is the neighbourhood I grew up in: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...175.55,,0,7.83

When I was in my early 20s, suddenly this playground zone was installed on the corner. There is not a playground anywhere in sight. There is not anywhere that any child should ever play on this corner, yet, somehow, someone got a playground zone installed. Strangely enough, if you follow the road around, you will go past a large green space. That is where the neighbourhood kids all played, but the playground zone ends long before you get to it.

Playground and school zones should be installed and enforced with one objective in mind: Protecting stupid kids from their own stupidity. They should not be installed somewhere just because an old lady who lives there thinks that people drive too fast past her house. School zones should be installed in locations where there is an increase in foot traffic specifically during school hours, when school is in session. If a playground is present and it is frequented by children potentially any time of the day and any day of the year, there should be a playground zone.

Installing too many playground and school zones in illogical locations diminishes the value of all of them, which increases the danger posed to the very children those zones are designed to protect.

Also, I believe there should be an additional fine tacked on to the speeding in a school zone fine for anyone who has a child enrolled at the school. Often, the parents dropping off their stupid children are the worst offenders of all.

I'm really surprised that those tickets get issued; wouldn't they be pretty easy to get out of?

I'm thinking all you would have to do is tell the judge you were watching the road instead of keeping all of your attention focused on the speedometer. Isn't that the point of school/playground zones- slow down and watch for children.

I'd also like to find the quote made by police yesterday and save it in case I need it- because the officer basically says "just slow down when there are kids around- it's common sense."

I know that 31 is technically speeding, but in a real world sense, do these actually get issued? I'm sure that my speedometer needle is thick enough to put me off 1 km/h. If the tread on my tires is new, my speedometer might be that much off. I'm exaggerating, but I can't see a ticket being issued for 31. 35, sure.

I would think (hope) the cops would allow a 10% deviation, at least. But basically, the cops would have a tough time convincing a judge their equipment was accurate to within 3 km/hr.

It's funny when you're an Asian women driver in a Honda Civic.

But yeah I broke the comedians rule, don't use a joke twice.
