Former Oakland Raiders DB Jack Tatum passed away at the age of 61.

Quote:
Tatum, it says here, was not the dirty player that he has been painted as — he simply hit harder than perhaps anyone who has ever played the game, and you remember those collisions to this day if you saw or heard them.
Ronnie Lott and Dick Anderson, among his peers, will tell you that.

Dirty? Maybe not. But he wasn't just some nice guy who hit hard either. The man intimidated everyone with his hitting and his demeanor. With all due respect to Jack Lambert, Dick Butkus and Deacon Jones, Jack Tatum was the most feared man in NFL history bar none.

Top 3 Raider of all time IMO.

Jack 'The Assassin' Tatum was a scary football player.

Involved in one of the most infamous hits in NFL history.

Quote:
The collision with Stingley happened Aug. 12, 1978, at Oakland Coliseum.
Stingley was cutting inside when he lunged for a pass which fell incomplete. Bearing down at full speed from the opposite direction, Tatum met Stingley while the receiver was off balance and leaning forward. Stingley crumpled to the ground, his fourth and fifth vertebrae severed.
...
"I understand why Darryl is considered the victim. But I'll never understand why some people look at me as the villain."
Tatum was not penalized on the play and the NFL took no disciplinary action, but it did tighten its rules on violent hits.
I did'nt realize that he was such a great buckeye:

Quote:
Tatum was a part of the "super sophs" class that led Ohio State to an unbeaten season and the national championship in 1968. He stole the headlines in the Buckeyes' showdown with No. 1 Purdue early in the season, shadowing All-American running back Leroy Keyes in Ohio State's 13-0 upset of the Boilermakers.
In his three years as a starter, Tatum's teams went 27-2 and won two Big Ten titles.
Each week after an Ohio State game, the coaching staff awards the "Jack Tatum hit of the week" award for the hardest tackle or block by a Buckeye.

It seems the worries about Mt. Cody going into the draft may have some legs

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shu...urn=nfl-258518

Hope he gets it together. Was definitely someone I wanted the Broncs to look at til the Jamal Williams signing.

I have a feeling that if Bryant was told to carry Demarcus Ware's pads, he would have complied.

Bryant's going to be tied to a goalpost some time soon.

I'm guessing your pick would be Manning? It's too bad there isn't a recent head-to-head match-up between the two to judge them on....

Tom Brady will once again show us why he is the best quarterback of this century come September

That's sound logic right there. I guess Tony Romo and Josh Freeman are better than Brees based on this.

Thank god TO signed with the Bengals after hearing rumors about the Jets interest yesterday. I actually like TO, but there's already not enough balls to go around to Edwards, Holmes and Cotchery.

I thought the NFL was cracking down on stealing defensive signals?

It really sucks that McNabb had to go to a division rival. He's still a really classy player, and stuff like this makes it hard to cheer against him.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfceast/post...cnabb-on-day-1

Quote:
Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb received a number of messages before his first practice today, but one text message really stood out. His former mentor and teammate, Donovan McNabb, was texting to wish him luck on the first day of training camp. That seems like good karma for both players, and it speaks to how classy McNabb has handled this entire situation.
"He told me to take one practice at a time and be patient," Kolb said Tuesday following the first practice of training camp. "And I said, 'Yeah, I hear you. It's a long season.' That's what I was saying before. You kind of get caught up in the whole realm of the whole season and whatever expectations. Just take it one practice at a time at this time of year and that will help you get a lot better."

I think the Pats are in for a surprise this year, the Jets and Dolphins have really closed the gap on them.

I think he has a massive season, the injury he had 2 years ago is basically a 20-24 month injury

people are sleeping on the Pats, I think they still win that division and the Jets disappoint big time

Shonn Greene will be a top 5 running back in the league this year. The guy has speed and power. No way the Jets fall back. Pats could still win the division, but Jets will get a wild card berth. Drafting Kyle Wilson in the first was a brilliant move. Revis and Cromartie on the outside with Kyle Wilson covering the Welker spot is why they did it. They can handle any passing attack now.

Tod Liewieke leaving his role of president with the Seahawks (actually heads up and manages Paul Allen's group, which includes Seattle's MLS team and the Portland Trail Blazers), to be a part owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning and oversee operations there.

Odd timing. He did build up the SEA team fairly well over the years since 2003, and brought upper management stability. Although the way he handled the Mora/Carroll thing earlier this year was poor (while Mora was doing end of season press conferences and facing the media, Tod was in LA hiring Carroll), and he was the one responsible for firing the Trailblazers GM the day of the NBA draft last month.

Makes you think he's lacking some tact...timing like this doesn't help either.

Edit: Also, Seattle signed 2nd round pick from Notre Dame, WR Golden Tate, today too.

The Jets only got in to the playoffs because the Colts pulled their guys in that game

I think they are getting way too much hype, and calling Shonn Greene a top 5 back in the league is a huge stretch at this point as he hasn't done anything to be in the same class as AP, CJ, MJD, Rice, Stephen Jackson, Frank Gore

SD fans were thrilled with losing Cromartie as well, he doesn't tackle at all which was very evident in the playoff game last year

Yes the Jets got in the playoffs because the Colts pulled their starters, could the Jets still have won (down 7 at half, who knows). The Jets got to the AFC Championship game on their own.

I didn't call him a top 5 back. I said he will be. It's called a prediction.

Cromartie can't tackle. He isn't being put in a position where he has to. Revis requires no help on his side of the field which allows Cromartie to gun for interceptions and have safeties clean up the mess. And if he is that bad then he loses his spot to Wilson who is going to be a stud. (that's a prediction too)

my bad, when you say Shonn Greene will be a top 5 running back in the league this year it sounds a lot more like a statement than a prediction

My prediction is that the Jets miss the playoffs and finish 3rd in the AFC East, I think the Pats and Dolphins are much more balanced although I don't know if I would predict the Dolphins in the playoffs as I think the wild card's are likely to come out of the South/North divisions
