We may curse our bad luck that it's sounds like its; who's sounds like whose; they're sounds like their (and there); and you're sounds like your. But if we are grown-ups who have been through full-time education, we have no excuse for muddling them up.
I like In N Out Burger. Then again, there's a a whole lot more to their menu than you'll see on the board.
I've been to LA many times and while parts of it can be a dump... there IS lots there/in the area. Yes, the airport sucks, it's old, etc. I'm not sure what's doable in a 9 hour timespan, but Santa Monica is great. Lots of shopping. Long Beach isn't bad, nearly crashed a Jehovah's Witness convention on the way to the aquarium, oops.
Pasadena was nice but I spent way too much money there.
LAX is actually in the city of Los Angeles. The area is also known as Westchester. I used to live and go to school in the area and the address is sometimes 'Los Angeles', sometimes 'Westchester'...but not Inglewood.
Inglewood is a few miles east, just on the other side of the 405 freeway. And yes, Ingle'hood is a dump. The (Great Western) Forum is in Inglewood, home of the occasional dog show.
My favorite places in LA:
Getty Center - awesome free museum and park overlooking the city that pretty much feels like the height of civilization.
Silver Lake - a bit of a hipster neighbourhood, but pretty cool shops and a completely different feel from Venice Beach and Santa Monica; if you like comic books, Secret Headquarters is pretty much the coolest comic book store ever.
The LA Farmer's Market - not the new shopping monstrosity, but the original, stall based one. Best churrasco grill I've ever had is there.
Museum of Jurassic Technologies in Culver City - this is an odd one. Not for everyone, but one of my favorite little places anywhere. Really cool museum of curiosities such as portraits of dogs of the russian space program and dioramas of LA area trailer parks.
LA is a huge place, to say LA is a dump is a pretty uninformed statement.
LAX is basically in Inglewood, and that is a dump, but on either side of LAX is El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach Redondo Beach (my preferences) to the other side is Marina Del Rey, Santa Monica, Venice. Venice is kind of a dump but the rest of those places are certainly not. You're close to West LA, but with traffic you probably don't want to chance getting to and from the Getty Museum, which is near Westwood, Bel Aire, Beverly Hills and Beverly Glen, also parts of LA that are not dumps. There are a lot of beautiful places in LA, and there are lots of places I wouldn't be caught dead in. But to label an entire city a dump because you've only been around the airport just isn't legitimate. Obviously living by the airport would not be desireable so the neighborhoods surrounding it are lower income, higher crime areas.
BTW, by car, it takes me about 20 minutes to get from LAX to Manhattan Village (shopping center) and maybe ten minutes from there to the pier so if you had transportation you probably have plenty of time to take in beach time. Its hotter than hell here right now, so I would avoid the more inland parts of LA.
I've been to LA 4 times.
It's urban sprawl gridlocked air pollution hell.
Of course there are going to be some really nice neighbourhoods in a city that size, and I would never deny some of them are beautiful, but really LA is a crappy city located in a perfect climate with some decent natural surroundings.
Downtown LA sucks. It's no where near the city centre of a "world" city.
The transit system is pathetic.
The river is a dried up concrete landfill.
You have to wait every day for the sun to finally burn through the smog.
LA sucks. No thanks.
San Francisco is the city to visit in California.
San Diego is the place to live if you can't afford San Fran.

That market is awesome. Simply awesome. God, I could squat there for years.
