Beggers can't be choosers. If you're a football fan I see no reason not to support the build up of the MLS. Personally I kind of find it exciting that I'll be able to be a part of something local when the Whitecaps join the league. Any traditions or rivalries that get built up will be built by the original fans. The reason people get excited about MLS teams is the same reason people in Finland get excited about Jokerit in the SM Liga in hockey. Is it the best team on earth, no. But people can take a personal stake in a team that is theirs, its on their turf, and they can participate directly in it by going to games. I think all in all the MLS has done great things for the sport in North America and it will continue to grow. Doesn't mean I still can't watch the Premiership.
