Wow. Guess who called it??
Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has agreed sign for Liverpool on a free transfer, subject to a medical.
Quote:
It has been reported that Cole, 28, was offered wages of £90,000-a-week to stave off interest from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. Cole left Stamford Bridge at the end of last month after Chelsea decided not to offer him a new deal.
It essentially means that Cole and Yossi Benayoun are swapping clubs, with a payment of £5 million in Liverpool's favour.

Cole for Benny. I called it I guess, but I dont know if I like it. Wait and see I guess, but whoever is bought to play left back had better be good!

I think its a great signing for Liverpool
if their main 4 attacking players in a game are Torres, Kuyt, Cole, and Gerrard there are going to be goals
its just a matter of where the goals come from in the 20 games that Cole and Torres miss

Liverpool still have lots of work left to do, I'm still not convinced this was a good move. Wait and see.

In contrast to you I think that it's a fantastic move. Regardless of the fact that Cole's an excellent player, it shows ambition to the likes of Stevie and Torres, and others too. The rumours of Liverpool's demise have been greatly exaggerated if you will.
Cole gives the team many options. He's extremely versatile and adds much needed skill up front.
In a way it's Cole plus 5 million for Yossi. I'd do that deal any day of the week.
I'm over the moon. The team and fans really needed this massive boost!

I gotta think the Cole signing will be huge for liverpool, and I'm glad he went there instead of spurs, although I'm pretty surprised to be honest.

Yeah me too.
However, after thinking about it Cole is a Liverpool type player, before Benitez came along anyway. He is exactly the kind of player they used to sign.
The wages will help, sure, but I have to think Cole wanted guarantees something the other interested teams were unable to provide.

No they're not. It's not a rumour. We paid Cole 20-30K more per week (depending on the figure you believe) than Tottenham would.
It was made possible by selling Benayoun, yes but have people already forgotten how much the s pocketed the last couple transfer windows?
Have they forgotten that we just sold a talented 21 year old Argentian LB for no good reason, with the likes of Paul Konchesky replacing him?
If the Yanks are going to sell the Mercedes then you can't take out the wheels, stereo system and leather seats.
I like the signing, but to say that we are being too negative, or that the owners aren't s and extremely cheap is wrong. People don't want them out just because of a lack of transfers.

Don't kid yourself. It was entirely motivated by wages. Liverpool were offering 20,000/week more than Spurs. What kind of guarantees would Liverpool be able to give Cole that Arsenal and Spurs couldn't?

First team football
But, yeah you're right, 20 grand a week is a huge motivator no doubt

Gerrard Happy to Stay at Liverpool
Quote:
Steven Gerrard has revealed he is happy to stay at Liverpool after holding talks with boss Roy Hodgson.
Gerrard had been linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer after Liverpool's failure to qualify for the Champions League but, having spoken to Hodgson, it appears he is happy to stay at Anfield.
"I made it clear that I simply needed to concentrate on the World Cup and then have a decent holiday with my family," he told the club's official website. "I wanted the chance to meet Roy Hodgson privately and, having done so, I'm very impressed with his plans for the future. I can't wait for the new season to start."

Good to hear, read the article hes happy to have Joe Cole around too. I'm warming to Cole, but I wont be sold until he performs. Last time I got my hopes up about a fairly major signing was Keane.....I wont be making that mistake again....
Masch may stick around...
Quote:
Roy Hodgson is adamant Liverpool have had no contact with Inter Milan regarding midfielder Javier Mascherano, and says suggestions he has been snubbed by the player are "exaggerated".

Dont know how I feel about this either. Usually if you have a player that wants gone and it hasnt been able to work, you make it work, once they feel they'd be better suited elsewhere its tough to turn back, especially if your teammates know that you effectively tried to bail on them but failed.
Gerrard and Carra convinced Cole to come...

I know that quoting one's self is the height of arrogance but....

Stepover, stepover, goes left. Every. Single. Time.
He could go to Liverpool though, hes got England teammates there in Stevie and Carra. I just dont know if I'm sold on wanting him.

Liverpool continue to make moves...and news.
Liverpool agree £5m fee for Danny Wilson
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/st...nsfers&cc=5901
18 years old. Sounds like a very promising central defender. He won both the PFA Scotland and Scottish Football Writers' young player of the year awards.

But can he play left back?
I like this signing. Future Scottish international, very experienced, even got some Champion's League action in. Helps shore up the CB position. So now, we've got Carra, Skrtel, Agger, Unpronouncable Greek and Wilson, and Degen I suppose.

Hopefully his wages aren't as out of control as they say, but Cole's a bit younger than Benayoun, so it should be decent....far as this Wilson fellow...remains to be seen.

Acxtually, having seen a few in person, they're quite nice. You want to talk hideous jerseys? Man U and Spurs.
Degen is gone. I didnt find him overly useful anyways really. I hope Hodgson has a plan here.
