Contador went for the stage win and finished 2nd, 11 seconds ahead of Schelck.
Hesjedal reminds 12th overall. Fell short in the breakway attempt.

I'm still floored by the speed of the peleton, one the wildest things I've seen.
It went so fast that Armstrong was dropped (again).

Vino finally gets his stage win today. Great breakaway at the end.

the Tour could be won or lost tomorrow, if you watch one stage of the race this year, pick tomorrow's.

Yeah, I'm definitely watching it. Does this stage have the most climbing out of all of them?

not sure if it's the most, but it's definitely the toughest.

Contador in yellow today, he attacked after Schleck had thrown his chain, kind of an unwritten rule that you don't attack when the leader has a mechanical.

Yeah doesn't sound good, reading alot of websites and they're blasting Contador. Seems an unnecessary move as Contador could have waited. He didn't need to be in yellow today.

Meanwhile a spirited effort by Hesjedal gets him back into the top 10!

Yeah, I'm an Armstrong fan, everyone knows it. But it's pretty telling when every single member of Astana's team from last year's Tour went to Radioshack.

Contador is a talented rider, probably the best in the world right now. But even at his most arrogant, Lance was the biggest defender of the Tour's traditions and unwritten rules.

The fans booed Contador when he was awarded the jersey today. Awesome.

Schleck slipped his chain in the process of escaping the group of overall contenders near the top of the Porte de Balčs, and Contador ignored one of the unwritten rules of cycling etiquette by responding and attacking the yellow jersey in his moment of difficulty.

Rather than waiting for the Luxembourger, Contador blasted clear with Denis Menchov (Rabobank) and Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) while Schleck gave desperate pursuit on the descent to the finish. Contador finished at 2:50 behind Voeckler, while Schleck reached the line at 3:29.

The incident will likely turn into one of the great debates surrounding this Tour de France, much like in 2003 when Lance Armstrong crashed on the climb to Luz Ardiden when a spectator's musette caught his bars. Back then, Jan Ullrich waited for him, but was it fair for Contador to continue his attack while Schleck was stopped with a dropped chain?

"It's not up to me to decide if it was fair or not, but I wouldn't have raced like that," said a seething Schleck after the finish, having already surrendered his yellow jersey. "My belly is so full of anger right now ... I'm going to want to get my revenge."

They're on the Tourmalet now. Schleck needs to attack and right now. He will not beat Contador in the time trial.

Top 2 just pulling away from the rest now.

Hesjedal has had a great tour. He's hanging in there with the 2nd group of climbers. He'll be 8th or 9th after this stage.

Schleck with the stage win. Early reports saying Hesjedal finished 4th!! (tough to tell as the fog is so thick at the finish)

i dont think the rule is you have to wait, you just arent supposed to attack in this case.. i might be wrong but i think that is the unwritten rule?
