I have a broken foot with a cast and crutches and people wont even move over on the sidewalk let along give me a seat while I am waiting for meds at safeway or bus stop. Luckily my bus is never full or else I fear I would have to try and stand for an hour because people in this city have no respect for others. But I guess I am a 23 year old boy and those people probably think he is young he can stand even though I can't put weight on my foot for the next 4 weeks. People need to learn proper manners it really bothers me. Don't even get me started on people who don't hold doors open for people behind them or people leaving.

The bus and train suck, I rode them for 5 years and decided never again if possible. Now the only time I need to give up my seat is when a carjacker puts a gun to my head at a traffic light.

Chivalry has been thrown around a lot in this thread.. so lets get down to it and actually see what we are talking about here.
chiv·al·ry
 /ˈʃɪv əl ri/ Show Spelled[shiv-uh l-ree] Show IPA
–noun, plural -ries for 6. 1. the sum of the ideal qualifications of a knight, including courtesy, generosity, valor, and dexterity in arms.
2. the rules and customs of medieval knighthood.
3. the medieval system or institution of knighthood.
4. a group of knights.
5. gallant warriors or gentlemen: fair ladies and noble chivalry.
Oh... I wasn't aware that we had so many Knights posting on this board. I am curious, what lands and tittles do you hold?
Quote:
The chief chivalric virtues were piety, honor, valor, courtesy, chastity, and loyalty. The knight's loyalty was due to the spiritual master, God; to the temporal master, the suzerain; and to the mistress of the heart, his sworn love. Love, in the chivalrous sense, was largely platonic; as a rule, only a virgin or another man's wife could be the chosen object of chivalrous love. With the cult of the Virgin Mary, the relegation of noblewomen to a pedestal reached its highest expression.
|
Ah yes.. the 50 year old woman on the train with the gull to ask someone to up their seat, such a noble woman! May her hair forever shine in a thousand moon lights..
Quote:
In practice, chivalric conduct was never free from corruption, increasingly evident in the later Middle Ages. Courtly love often deteriorated into promiscuity and adultery and pious militance into barbarous warfare. Moreover, the chivalric duties were not owed to those outside the bounds of feudal obligation. The outward trappings of chivalry and knighthood declined in the 15th cent., by which time wars were fought for victory and individual valor was irrelevant. Artificial orders of chivalry, such as the Order of the Golden Fleece (1423), were created by rulers to promote loyalty; tournaments became ritualized, costly, and comparatively bloodless; the traditions of knighthood became obsolete.
|
Whaaaat? You mean this system wasn't flawless? My Word. Exploited eh... the same way this woman exploited our poor OP's position on the train and in society?
Stop living in 1423.

Is this really the route you're going with your argument? A dictionary definition of a word which everyone knows the meaning of when applied to modern times? If you don't understand that chivalry applies to our times then you are dumb. Straight up.

And is this really the route you are going with your argument? Personal insults?
I think you are doing my job for me.
Maybe take a quick look at this thread if you don't mind:

I'm not even 30 but broke my leg in February which causes my leg to swell and it's very uncomfortable for me to stand for extended periods. I wouldn't ask for a seat because I know that if I did, the person I was asking it of would have the same thoughts as you, but perhaps take it a step further and say no.
My thoughts are this; if someone is asking for your seat, maybe assume that she has an ailment instead of assuming she's healthy.

This is the problem. When parents try to teach their sons to be Chivalrous they jump on World of Warcraft nowadays!

Well I agree with you that if she was straight forward enough to ask one could assume she needs it, the fact is that some will take advantage of this.
I personally would have given up the seat not because what others around me would think but because she asked. In the same sense if anyone asked me for my seat I would assume they needed it and give it up. Also if I noticed someone who I think needs a seat I would offer but I would not just give up the seat just because it was a girl.

I don't think it is anyones fault that we assume we are being taken advantage of.
That is the state of the world we live in. If you agree or disagree that is your opinion.. but it doesn't change the fact that we need to be cautious at all times and always assume you are being scammed.

If you're a 24 year old in good shape, you should just stand anyway.

I am not sure where I fall on this subject but it's interesting to see that people are quite opinionated on the subject. I disagree on the pansy comments. I don't think people are grasping the idea that this isn't just a one time commute and it has nothing to do with me not being able to stand. I am fully aware that as a youngish gentleman I am able to stand, it comes to whether I should feel obligated to by someone who is also able to stand simply because they are older than me and a woman.
If she had asked in a kind manner without any sort of presumption of me giving up my seat I would have gladly got up.
Just to clear things up a little, this was near Brentwood I believe and at the time I had not even looked up from my book at the time and did not notice her until she asked me for my seat.

Have you given up your seat everyday? I think you're overreacting to one request which just goes to show us what kind of person you are.
One lady who may or may not have been able-bodied asked you once to give up your seat and you create a thread about the injustice of it all...
Maybe she was rude... maybe that defines her character. How you react to it defines yours.

I get on at Crowfoot too, and I always choose a seat furthest away from the doors and priority seating. However, I will give up my seat to the elderly, pregnant or disabled. But if you look otherwise healthy I'm not going to get up.
When my wife was pregnant she stood many times riding from downtown to crowfoot. Where were all these heroes then?

If she was really rude you can give up your seat, but you should fire off a fabric staining gas bicuit before you stand up, that way she can comfortably sit in flavor country, and everytime she inhales she can think of you.
But seriously, I'll give up my seat to the elderly, the infirmed, and hot chicks.
But no fat chicks.
