I actually don't really agree with the comments. I think Canadian programming is fine really. As mentioned, there have been a lot of good shows (not the train show).
The problem is, when you have the media capital of the world next door, it's kind of hard to produce programming up to the standards that the US has.
Canadian TV has done fine for itself, I think a lot of people are quick to say Canadian TV sucks just because it isn't American TV.
Red green was awesome. I believe an astronaut even asked for a tape of the show to be sent up to the ISS so he could watch it while in orbit.

I think a large part of the problem is that they keep ramming these rural shows down our throat. That's not Canada anymore, most people live in large cities. Trying to push Canadian culture as a culture that doesn't really exist anymore is silly.
Also, CBC comedy is just too simple and boring. Corner Gas was awful, I don't know who found that show funny, certainly not the internet generation. And then they gave those two people from it another show.
Corner Gas was one of the most successful Canadian shows of all time . . . . . and hilarious most of the time.
The Table Hockey Summit is a Canadian classic and, moreover, only Canadians - or maybe Russians - would understand even a single scene.

The Canadian entertainment industry as a whole is pretty terrible. Have I ever watched quality TV on CBC? I mean, shows that are filmed in Canada are pretty good but if the production COMES from Canada it's largely horrible.

I would like to argue that Canadian comedy is actually pretty funny, but more for the cult favorite / obscure stuff that pokes fun at our own culture, and usually in retrospect is it truly appreciated.
The Trailer Park Boys, SCTV and Kids in the Hall come to mind, but Kevin Spencer and Buzz (way more obscure) also poke serious fun at Canadian life. Corner Gas seemed to be targeted at conversative rural types who like their comedy spit-shine clean.
Anyone who doubts Canadian TV, I say truly check out the archives of the National Film Board of Canada, and you'll find gold in many different places.
