Meh, I just assume that on TV and in the movies they use magical death wands of awesome because real guns are boring as heck.
Do you really want to watch an epic gun battle where everyone is constantly hiding behind cover, reloading ever 10 seconds and running out of ammo? I personally can get over the reality because, well, I'm not watching a TV show/Movie for realism. If I wanted that, I'd join the army.
This is why I can't stand Mythbusters. They test the dumbest crap that hollywood puts out on the premise that people might think this stuff is real (no, only dumb people would think that). Past that, it's just two overweight guys (and one awesome stash) blowing up - with the shoddiest excuse for science ever.
Honestly, picking apart gun realism is like debating the realities of Star Trek technology.
