Obviously if you post something without a shell that may require tinkering Apple people are going to rip on it because it's opposite of the Apple philosophy. For the amount you two argue, you and FanIn80 are actually pretty similar (different sides of the same coin). If you guys got married it could be a hilarious sitcom.
I think he's like 20 years older than me though

For me, this is all a hobby I guess and I like to build and tinker and make something of my own, not buy prepackaged that goes for most of the stuff that I buy. It's a different philosophy you're right.

I built a NAS that my friend uses through an Xbox to host 4TB worth of 1080p movies. I would actually recommend something like that or a streaming media box that can access the files from your computer directly like the ASUS O!Play if you already have a computer because that's actually the cheapest and least painful option in my opinion. You just plug it in and you can access the files on your main home computer and just press play on video files.

Edit: Actually a thread about build-your-own media centers would be pretty awesome.
Because I don't think there is a critical mass of people who would be interested to make it an interesting thread. It will just die in ignomy from thread nervousness. I usually get ideas from other people's threads. There's nothing I really want enough to start my own thread. I usually just get an idea from somewhere else and feel like talking about it but it's not actually something I want or need. I do pick my audience, I keep most of my tech talk to other forums but chime in if I see something interesting here.
