Yeah, I've had bad experiences with WD. Not that you will, but I had one of those MyBooks and it bit the dust right after the warranty expired

It's astounding I haven't experienced a hard drive die on me yet. I never pay attention to brand ... I tend to let price be my guiding light. I'm totally due which is partly why I went with Drobo.

I bought the HD (egads - Apple TV yesterday, new HD today, my Visa gonna max out...).
I'm only going to use it to back up my 1TB media collection. There are a LOT of DVD's on there that took hours and hours and hours to rip and I'd dread having to do it again. So I'm scared that my drive could fail and I'd have to do that all over again...
So even if WD is a flakey brand, I'm hoping both drives never flake out at the same time. And it's not like it's my main drive that will be getting a lot of activity.

Especially looking at Future Shop and Best Buy as comparisons at $350 (and some of those aren't even 1080p either).

I think I saw a $350 720p 22" in the best buy flyer today (the same one you are referring to I assume). The 1080p isn't a big deal for me because it wouldn't be hooked up to HD anyways. The reviews say the sound is poor on the ViewSonic TV. I think I may just go to Best buy and future shop and buy one in store.
EDIT: Complete brain farted and thought it was $50 difference not a $150. Back to leaning towards the ViewSonic.

I know, its the 1080p that is really selling me, but it would be my main TV, which is something that's holding me up. I have around a 28' old CRT, and it's super huge, but, this one really has me wondering. The savings are almost worth it.

Are people actually able to tell the difference between 720 and 1080 resolution on a 22" screen? I don't think I'd be able to.

I don't know if this helps you drew24, but I also found this on newegg.com. For 199 and is 1080p as well.
edit: Nevermind, NewEgg doesn't ship internationally. Jerks...

I'm really looking at the 22" TV as well. I think I'm going to pull the trigger; the one good thing about Dell is the return policy.

Would you recommend extended repair/return ken0042?

Anyways, if the redflagdeals predictions are correct, I'm waiting for the following:
Inspiron 580 Desktop
• Intel Core i5-750
• 6GB / 1TB
• ATI Radeon HD 5450 1GB
• Dell 23" HD Widescreen Monitor
$899
or
Studio XPS 7100 Desktop
• AMD Athlon II X4 630
• 6GB / 1TB*
• ATI Radeon HD 5450 1GB Card
• Dell 23" HD Widescreen Monitor
$899
Are these a good deal? If so, which one would people recommend? AMD or Intel?
|
I was looking at those too. Anyone have any suggestions which processor is better?

Extended warranty? I wouldn't- or at least on a $200 product.
Or to be more accurate; I just bought it and didn't buy anything extended on it. Extended warranties are insurance on items you cannot afford to replace. (IMHO)
What I was talking about is that I can buy this, and if the sound isn't acceptable I can just send it back to Dell for a full refund. I think it's going to be OK for my needs- this TV will be in the kitchen and won't be hooked up to HD (or digital for that matter.) The reviews seem to indicate that the sound issues are in digital mode; not sure if that refers to using the digital tuner or HDMI in; but I'll be going coax with this TV.

So Dell's super good with returning things I'm guessing? I've never dealt with them so I wouldn't know.

Ugh, just ordered the TV. Hopefully it works out, but if not there's always returning it. If not, I can just flip the old TV as well. Here's to hoping.

I'm trying to decide between two monitors, the ST 2410 and the U2311 which should be coming up. I know the U2311 is a far better panel and has display port but my eyes aren't getting any better for reading and I'm concerned about the higher pixel pitch of the U 2311 (.265 compared to the ST 2410 .277). I'm currently using a 22" 16x10 screen with a pitch of .282 which is fine when I increase the print size by rolling my mouse while holding 'control' but this often causes the screen to stretch farther than the monitor is wide.
Okay I think I've figured it out, the 23" screen despite being about the same real estate as the 22", is about 1 3/8" wider than the 22" screen, so I'll have some latitude when increasing the print size.
Any comments appreciated.

I bought the ST2410 back in December. I bought 2 of them.
I don't know much of what you said there, but I'm happy with them.
However, they are a low end monitor really. I found a set of patterns that should
help you adjust colour, contrast, brightness and such.
On these monitors I can't adjust the very low levels, and the readme.txt said that's
due to it being low end, most of them are that way.
Other thing was that between the two of them there are colour differences, and I
can't make them adjust to be identical
I also bought some speakers that clip onto the monitor, so that's nice too, it removes
the need for bulky speakers on the desk.
It's a nice monitor, just that it's low end.

Most of the literature I've read for the last year has strongly favored Intel's new CPUs over AMD's. Just a caveat though - I tend to research the server chips (ie Xeon) over the desktop chips, but the fundamental chip is still the same. As you push up into the i7 range of CPU I would definately favor Intel, and would probably lean that way for i5 as well. Just my opinion, for what it's worth.
If you are interested, I find "Tom's Hardware" on the web a great combination of technical information and common sense real world comparison for things like this.
Here is a link to computer shopper, also favoring the i5 over the 630. It pretty much confirms what I've believe for a while now - Intel is back to being the performance leader, AMD is starting to compete on price.
