I'll admit I'm a little bit tentative when starting new threads. I don't really have any polarizing opinions though, and I get all my news from CP rather than going out and finding it, so it's not often I think of something that's start-a-thread worthy.
Like puckluck said, once you have a post or a thread that is a hit, usually you start to feel a bit more comfortable. For me there were two, one when I broke the Jamie Lundmark signing last summer and another when I transcribed an entire Darryl Sutter interview live from the Fan 960. That got me a lot of "Thanks", felt more comfortable contributing after that.
