I like Nenshi so far, but he needs to get moving or he won't have a chance.

Hehr announcing could put a serious dent in Nenshi's plans, perhaps he will just go for a council seat instead of mayor?

Yeah, in Nenshi and Hehr are splitting votes, I'll go for whoever has more support. The mayoral race is really the perfect situation to use Instant Run-off Voting... we should do that.

Joe Connelly is honest to god the worst possible choice that Calgary can make. He is the definition of fence sitter. City council will grind to an absolute stand still with him as mayor.
I think Kent Hehr spoke at my convocation ceremony.

I went to law school with Kent Hehr's sister and he was a year behind us. Great guy. Will try to help him campaign.

It's going to be "Attack of the Trolls" on this board if we elect a guy who's name is Kent Hehr, and who's father's name is Dick.

It's more a case of seeing who the alternatives are and holding my nose as I mark my X... Seriously though, he is the best candidate right now.
Though yeah, the WRA picking up a fourth seat, and the Liberals dropping to seven would be good provincially, especially given who the de-facto opposition is at the moment.

Interesting that Kent Hehr doesn't really say anything about the gun registry.
Really curious what his stance on it is.

Why? It's not a municipal issue.

That may be, but I'll want to find out his platform on Guantanamo before I vote for him.
Also climate change
And cod fisheries

Well, he is a MLA now. It has been a provincial issue at times.
And I'm just curious dammit!

I believe that, more pertinent to yourself, is Hehr's position on dumping giant ass sandstone boulders in the park next door to you.

Hehr has an excellent chance of winning. Have met him a few times as he was campaigning for MLA. Really liked him. Out of the current slate, he is definitely the best.
McIver, as Hehr alluded to in his presser is a grandstander that is seemingly against everything, scores some cheap political points but never actually puts out real ideas for how to make Calgary better. His Calgary is one where the tax increase is 4.2% instead of 4.8%, but nothing much else to show for it except for some more sprawl maybe. Not to mention he has a lot of ties to Craig Chandler and PGIB, which is just scary. Maybe it's useful to have a guy like him on Council, but certainly is not the right mayor for Calgary.
Connelly is just nuts. Alnoor has no chance, neither does Lord.
I like Nenshi for mayor, but he has stated he would likely only run for mayor if no one else better came along. I wonder if Kent Hehr fits the bill for him. My guess is that Nenshi goes after Ward 4 or 5.

Not much actual policy is actually revealed obviously in a press conference, but he did talk a bit about taxes and smart growth (which incidentally, go hand in hand).

Hehr, a lawyer who was left a quadriplegic after a random shooting 18 years ago, said Calgarians want a world-class city with low taxes and believes the city needs to continue with smart growth

Tidbits from his press release:
Quote:
Calgarians need a mayor who understands that smart growth is the key to our future success, not just growth at any price.
Calgarians need a mayor who understands that spending our money wisely is better, not just spending more money.
Calgarians need a mayor that will maintain world-class services, and still keep our taxes low.

I wish that homeless guy who directs traffic downtown would run for a mayor. That guy looks like a political dynamo. He knows how to manage Calgary's infrastructure.
