I was disappointed that Full Tilt Poker Academy requires real money. Pretty naive, huh. I could just picture how much I would lose; perhaps less than I would lose if I just threw myself out there. It does seem that my play changes when playing with virtual cash as opposed to the real thing. Is it like that for you guys?

Real money vs. play money - there is no comparisn. In my experience on play money tables I would venture to say the percentage of flops seen on the average table is easily well above 50%, and alot of the time there will be several players all-in preflop with pretty much any two cards. basically, players are just there to gamble. If you play that way for real money, no matter what the stakes, you will never be a profitable poker player.
In my opinion, using play money tables to learn how to play poker (if you're just starting out) is not a good idea. It's hard to play the right way when 70% or more of the players at the table are playing fast and loose. Better of starting at the penny tables or $10 NL ($0.05/0.10 NL). Again, just my opinion.

The best thing anyone can tell you is bankroll management. Look for an article about Chris Ferguson turning $0 into 10k. Basically you should only be using around 8% of your bankroll and play at the appropriate stakes for that amount. This will help avoid variance, but it takes discipline.

Sounds to me like playing poker online is incredibly similar to trading currency.
Easy to make money, even easier to lose it all, the most important thing is risk management, etc.
I might have to give it a shot.

Respectfully disagree, to play it is one thing but does it deserve to be on tv as much as it is? I suppose with that many channels they need to fill the air time with something.

The growing popularity of Poker has pretty much "forced" networks to carry it. It's amazing how it has taken over television. My parents are in their late 60's and have never played poker in their life but everytime it's on TV both my mom and dad HAVE to watch it

I am surprised how many guys that have talked poker in this thread that have never come out to the CP poker nights. Why don't you guys want to show up to a house game where the "house" doesn't take a cut?

I'd like to come, the nights have just never worked out for me. Crazy coincidence that I've been busy on every night.

I would, but I'm not in a position where I can be spending money right now.

I have played online a little bit, I have an account at Pokerstars. Not sure I would even know how to try to meet someone there? Whenever I have played online I just play in tournies. For the most part I prefer live play over online, just seems to be a little more entertaining for me.
But if you know how, it might be kinda cool to set up a table online for CPers some time?

I can do this for us, we just need to decide on what site we want to use and how much to charge for the buy-in.

Well, I don't want to hi-jack this thread too much. Perhaps we could start a thread about an online poker room for CPers?

This has been done before with limited success but we did try to have one every week, which was probably a little much and on Sundays. I would be up for it every now and then as I'm sure so would others.

What we can do is create a tournament (say through PokerStars) and then set it at $30-40 for buyin. Then we can decide if we want deep stacks, standard 1500 chips to start, or 1000, or whatever. If the minimum amount of players (say 1 table) don't sign up, the tournament is cancelled automatically for the week.
All we need is a CP password on the tournament itself.
Might make things a lot easier for many of the members who have long drives or simply just can't get out of the house for the night.
