So, it's been 37 years since the first Oil Crisis and energy activism really started in earnest. How far along are we now?

They showed Earth Hour celebrations around the world on last night's news. In Greece they turned off several hundred spotlights around the various ruins, and the rest of the news stories showed similar world landmarks that have round the clock lighting running in the 10's of thousands of watts.

So, which is better for the environment; that we don't waste very much the other 8759 hours of the year, or that we didn't turn what we had left off for that hour.

It just bugs me, a neighbour who refuses to use CFL bulbs in their house called to tell us we needed to turn off our lights; meanwhile I can count on one hand the number of incandescent bulbs I have in my house.

Interior CFL bulbs don't save near as much energy as people think. The waste energy in incandescent bulbs is emitted 100% as heat. Since in Calgary we heat our houses 8 months of the year, that heat load is made up by running the furnace more.

Spent it watching UFC, playing God of War III, making dinner and playing on the computer.

Bob wants to lose weight. Al Gore tells Bob, you can lose weight and live a long time if you stand up 1 time per year for 1 hour instead of sitting on your couch. Yes, it is a start, but he will be dead before he learns to actually lose weight.

The real approach should be. Bob, you COULD stand up 1 time per year for an hour and yes it would be a start but it means nothing, so don't even bother. What I need you to do is start walking every day for 1 hour. If you don't want to do this, no problem but you will die a early death.

I think any attempt at getting people to not abuse our planet is a good thing.

Simple as that.

Even if the only result of Earth hour is the discussion that is going on in this single thread, it has made a difference. It might not matter this week, or this decade but by bringing these issues to light, even on a small scale such as this will make people think about <insert random energy conservation measure here> .

Really? The amount of time, money and resources spent on this is all worth it even if the only result is a thread on CP? Ok.

If they didn't have UFC last night there would have been a lot more people participating. My girlfriend and her friends all wanted to do it but us boyfriends refused. They caved and we have a great UFC party... home theatre system, xbox, 3 50" tv's, all the lights turned on, and a few laptops. If there wasn't UFC we probably would have only had a TV on.

To be completely honest, I forgot about the whole thing and spent the hour surfing CP.

Way to go Calgary Puck, you are responsible for the impending apocalypse.

I didn't say worth it, I said make a difference.

Of course the discussion on CP alone won't make it worth it, but when you take into account that these same discussions are happening in countless other websites, coffee shops and water coolers around the world, it might be. You can't really quantify that kind of thing though.

For me, I don't give a rats behind about the environment. I would probably not spend a dime extra on an environmental product that didn't benefit me in a greater way. What I do care about is energy. What it costs me now and what it will cost me in the future. If I can get 10 million people in Canada to use Bullfrog power so technology is developed for me to eventually get cheaper and renewable power then I am all for it. Doesn't mean I would buy in though. My attitude might change in 10 years when I am not putting myself through school with 2 kids.

For now I will toss my recyclables in the blue bin because it is easy. I will turn my lights off because it costs me money. I seal my windows in the winter and use an automatic thermostat because I don't want to have my heating bill go through the roof. Sure these things might be helping the environment, but in the long run I just want to pay less for energy.

You can call me selfish if you want, and that's ok, because you would be right.

Didn't even know when it was. They didn't push it nearly as hard as they have in previous years.

Why don't you make an effort and think a little bit about what the person is actually trying to say. Instead of reading the words and not making a leap in what the point is. Is that too complicated for you?

His point was that if this one hour spreads the message to only some people then it is worth it. Considering it was world wide then I would assume it is more than just a few people.

Just because it doesn't affect you doesn't mean it doesn't affect other people.

As I said in my last post, I did not write or intend to imply that it was worth it. I simply said it made a difference.

I like to call earth hour vigilant hour. There was much work that needed to be done in the name of justice.

Wow, look in the mirror buddy. Ever heard of the ends don't justify the means? Like I have said, it is my opinion something else could have been done a lot better that resulted in actual help for the environment.

Keep up the good work.
