Taylor was on the Hour at the start of the month talking about this, really interesting interview. In the interview he explains how this relationship between Canada, USA, and himself came about . . . he "technically" didn't work for the CIA . . . directly anyway.

Sure this was a nice piece, but I believe the average Canadian is more grateful of being a neighbor to the Americans then vise verse.
When the fact of the matter is it should be the other way around. The USA needs us more then we need them.
Frankly I am sick and tired of the lack of credit that we get as Canadians. Is it because we are so modest? I'm not exactly sure. Watch fox news for an hour and it will make you lose hope in humanity.
I strongly dislike the whole American attitude and mentality.
|
Wow, way to put all of us in the same boat. But I guess you must hate me because I'm American. But way to generalize us all.

I basically consider Canada as part of the United States but liberal version. ( or vise versa )
I really would love to visit Canada. But school and money make it hard for me.
Now I also believe that if Canada were to come under attack like the US did during 9/11 we would see all us Americans rally around our Brothers and Sisters up north.
People have to realize that in the US school system they don't teach much about Canadian history. Well I guess that is hard when its American History class.
But I am a huge history fan and understand the sacrifices that our brothers and sisters up north made to make the rest of the world better.
I really don't understand why this always has to turn into I hate America or Americans thread. What did an American do to you?
I was taught by my mother that never hate someone or dislike someone because of were they are from. There is a difference between Americans and our government.
I wish our government wouldn't be such jack asses about canadians coming across the boarder because now its a huge PITA to get to go to canada now.
Any ways I was rooting for the Americans in the Olympics vs the Canadians but that's because I'm American.
Just because I do that doesn't mean I hate Canadians.

This is where most of the animosity comes from I think. Its the self-centered nature of America, due to the limited teaching of outside world in school. Especially considering we are so close geographically. A lot of American's don't seem to understand Canada and that we fought in the wars just like they did and just assume we weren't there because no one told them otherwise. As you said you're a history buff and the only reason you know of Canada at all is because of that.
In our school system we're taught WORLD history which includes a lot of US history, so its kind of insulting that the US wouldnt do the same. Most American's I've met have no idea where Calgary is or even that its a city. We have like 7 major cities. It would be like a Canadian having no clue where Denver or Seattle is. My apologies if this is poorly written it is late and I've had a lot of coffee. I hope this gets my point across without insulting you.

The worst is the eh comments for me personally. Americans use "huh?" in the same context all the time, especially Texans and Californians.
but it sucks when you feed stereotypes in front of them. Like saying eh or getting "Oh you're from Canada? do you play hockey"....."well...yes, but its not like we all do!"

well since I moved to alabama I see or meet anyone from Canada I ask if they are a hockey fan.
I just want to talk hockey to someone in person instead of only on message boards.
Hell I went to D3 club hockey tourney last weekend. I mean it's sad man.

I've lived in both countries, and really to me choosing where to live comes down to hot weather vs. free health care.

Maybe in some ways its because we're a smaller country. Which means we have a smaller government, which equals smaller problems.

That was a good piece. My only nitpick was when he mentioned that the majority of Canadians live 300 miles (or whatever) near the US boarder and then went on to talk about how cold the country is and sited some town in the Yukon as having the coldest day ever. I thought he could have made a better distinction between the Yukon being very cold and the rest of the country having varying climates. Not a big deal, just a minor nit pick.
But overall it was good. I am glad it didn't turn into the typical report on Canada where it focuses on stereotypes and applies regional qualities to the whole country.

It really is something if you want to think about it. For years upon years we've shared a largely unprotected border, stood beside each other in different wars, traded with each other, gone to each others countries, etc, etc.
I think people on both sides really take for granted what it means to have someone like Canada or the US right beside us.

When he was talking about that he was talking about "the Canadian North" not all of Canada

I lost so much respect for CNN when they allowed that dill weed Tucker Carlson on CNN...
And then NBC picks him up on their sister news station.. so that really made their stock dip in my eyes.
CTV has really impressed me this year though with their coverage, please hand them the keys to HNIC.

great video. I love both countries, for better or for worse. My grandfather was technically American, as he was born in North Dakota. I've lived in 3 and visited 6 provinces (looking forward to seeing the other 4 and the 3 territories). I've been to 30 of the 50 states, can't wait to visit the other 20.
We are the luckiest countries on the planet, something we take for granted far too often.

Really you know how special of a relationship our countries have is, when the United States says "security reasons we need everyone from another country to have a passport to enter" which is standard procedure, and makes perfect sense. However you have an entire country turn around and go WTF?!
To us needing a passport to enter the USA is like needing a passport to go to another province. Cognitively it doesn't make sense.
I love Canada, I like the United States, and I can't wait to go visit there again. I almost wish I had another experience living abroad to truly appreciate the relationship our nations have for one another.

hahaha yeah at risk of opening myself up to ridicule, its like in "The Proposal" when Sandra Bullock is informed that she is being deported and shes's like "I'm not an 'immigrant', I'm Canadian"
