While I am a firm believer in having a wingman, I think it's worth pointing out that it is rarely the wingman's fault that someone didn't score. Is a wingman usefull/important? Sure. Is he the one closing the deal for you? No. With that in mind here are some bullet points I think you need to consider.
1)You've got to take some responsibility for your wingman's poor performance. It's up to you to choose someone who will be willing to jump on the grenade, or at the very least isn't a beer nursing wet blanket. His failing as a wingman, is your failing as a flight director.
2)The ride dictates when the party's over, NOT the passenger.
If he wants you to give him a ride home, he can damn well wait until you strike out. Going home early was your fault, not his.
3)Win like a man, lose like a man. The best players don't make excuese for losing when their teammates don't show up. They put the team on their back, and score on their own. The reason you didn't score, wasn't becasue you're buddy didn't help out, you didn't score becasue you didn't ignore the adversity and step up your game.

You had me at hello....
um I mean, You're everyone's problem. That's because every time you go up in the air, you're unsafe. I don't like you because you're dangerous.
Sucks about your wingman dude.

I'd always keep a second wingman at another table on an "Alert 5". Ready to go should my primary wingman lose an engine and need to eject.
Was your wingman constantly mumbling "It's no good" during the night?
