Like I said, it's only a silver lining. Look on the bright side. It costs me $1,100 for a 2 day seminar with the CMA. At least you get a full semester worth of instruction.

Part of the difference between a university program and trade school program is that the university is supposed to provide a well-rounded education rather than an education focused towards a single job though.

This is true, however I've experienced that they also limit the options you can take (for example, Business courses), to those taking the options as their major.

Not until this year. So I had to fork out about $10K by myself. But I see what you're getting at, since I actually work full time and thus can sort of afford it. Back when I was in university, my part time job basically went all to tuition with a little left for anything else. I was paying $1,500 a semester when I started, and by the end, I was paying $2,500. It's insane how quick it goes up.

Jesus Christ. Its insane how cheap college is in Canada. Seeing all of these figures reminds me of the cost for textbooks alone in the US.

More than that actually. Average course load for engineering students is 11 per year. So that's $2200/year, plus the $500 fee puts it at a cool $2700/year extra (plus the 1.5%, but that's pocket change compared to the rest). That's a lot of KD!

$200 for each engineering class? That's $1k / semester more!!! What the hell happened to all the money that Schulich gave them?
Edit: I was in engineering from '99 to '04 and it averaged about ~$2k-$2.5k / semester, IIRC. I cheaped out and didn't buy many textbooks, so that saved me a bunch of money--they were largely worthless anyway.

What incentive does the University of Calgary have now over other Canadian institutions, especially for Calgary residents? It use to be cost but that is rapidly becoming a non-factor. It definitely isn't the crumbling infrastructure or the depleted lab budgets or the ballooning class sizes or the lack of qualified instructors.

PLUS: roughly $500 compulsory fee (several fees will be bound together into a super-mandatory fee, but it'll be around $500 in new fees)

If you're at the U of C and wanna bitch, bitch to your MLA, the Advanced Education minister and the Provost of the U of C. haven't read the entire thread (yet) but try 46.5% for haskayne/eng students. the current student body has already been largely understanding of small 1-2% changes, but this is simply unacceptable.
the facebook protest event has close to 300 people registered as 'attending' after one day and the actual event doesn't happen for a week. i can only imagine the revolt that will happen if the U actually decides to go through with this. we've been a largely passive student body (with the exception of the student union), but this actually has people mad
the worst part is that these are the faculties that are already revenue-positive because of support from alumni/business. now the uni is squeezing their students for even more $$$.
I finish this year (business student), but what do you do if you just finished first/second year??
Quote:
38.7% increase in tuition for Engineering
46.5% increase for Business
15.4% increase for Law
~1.5% increase across the board
$4000 more for Med
~$500 more for general fees

Lucky you. I also have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the U of C in 2002. I have an average paying, minimal reward job with limited upward potential
And I also have a PT job on the weekends to supplement my FT income
WHere do you work and how did I go so wrong?

The expensive tuition in the US is a bit of a stereotype. If you go with a state university (in the state you reside in), I think the cost is similar to that of Canadian universities (~$5000/year)

Didn't bout this till Herald showed up at U of C today and decided to interview us regarding this issue, I honestly couldn't even believe it so just rambled on with some crap. Asked the profs if they knew anything about this and they didn't have a "clue" than an hour later the SU president sent an email with all this.
I'm glad I'm done in 3 months.

Isn't Dr. Manzo on here? If I recall correctly, he posted something on here last year when I was in his class...I think MattyC was in it too actually.
