So...I'm not really a Warcraft fan per se, but are they actually making this?

So it would seem. A bit late, but they are doing it.

I think they may have missed the franchise's peak of popularity?

They definitely did, but people who played WoW for a long time and even quit long enough are still likely to see this movie. I know I will and I haven't played for a long time.
If they execute it well, there's a lot to work with here. The danger is trying to cram too much into one movie, or going too esoteric in hopes that the sequel will have a more familiar story and it bombing.

Filming wrapped a few weeks ago but it is CGI heavy so it will be a year or more for release I would imagine.

If its that CGI-heavy then the secret photos would likely look something like this:

They're not looking to feed off of WoW. They didn't sit down at a board room and count all of the WoW players and how much they could make if each player bought a movie ticket.
They are looking to create an awesome movie franchise... the fact that it is based on a game is almost beside the point.
Make an awesome movie based on the huge amount of lore in the Warcraft franchise, and people will want to see it. That's the idea.
I was at Blizzcon last year and I sat in on the panel about the movie with Duncan Jones. He said that Lord of the Rings is the benchmark for fantasy movies. You have to be at least that good.

Filming wrapped on May 23rd. They have some extremely advanced sequences that are... bleeding edge kind of stuff so their post production will take 20 months (January 2016).
Film has a release date of March 11, 2016.

The RTS genre was getting overloaded when Warcraft 3 came out, and the MMO market was there for the taking. It was probably the smartest decision Blizzard has ever made. If you cared about the Warcraft storyline, then WoW was a great way to flesh the world out in a way you wouldn't get from the RTS.

It really is an odd complaint. I've never played WoW myself, but you can't deny the success. And it's not like they ruined the RTS genre by making WoW. Boycotting Blizzard over it seems like a weird response. Didn't Starcraft II come out after WoW? You like RTS, but you're denying yourself from playing SCII because of WoW?

I really like what they have done with the cast for this movie. None of them are huge names but they have all proven themselves as good actors and have been in fairly big films/shows.

Lame I know but I have no interest or really even know what WoW is. All I know is I let my son play it for awhile and I didn't see or hear from him in a month. In that respect it was actually really good.

Pretty sure they had a number of re-shoots and 2nd unit stuff that carried into June. I could also be confusing this with Formula M which was going on at the same time.
ILM is working on this flick. Been meaning to head over there for a quick look around their new building, might just have to do that.

I haven't played since mists of pandora came out but if they do it right there is a lot of lore to "pull" from.

I played some WoW, but the RTS games are the foundation of the series. WoW was in the right place at the right time, and definitely helped the franchise reach the mainstream market, but to me Warcraft will always be an RTS. I will definitely be seeing this movie.

Played the game a fair bit a few years ago and would likely try it again were it not for time constraints. Will definitely see the movie though and I really liked Duncan Jones' other film Moon.
Also hoping this leads to a Starcraft and/or Diablo movie..

well ... once they were getting so close to release and not putting out any marketing for the movie about 6 months ago I was expecting it would suck, but I didn't think it would be this bad.
Haven't seen it yet obviously, but 19% right now on RT ... getting slaughtered
