I'm with Nage Waza.

It is entirely possible for someone to have a fantastic voice, write their own songs, sell a gabillion copies of their new album and still suck. But, I guess since she dresses like Elton John it must be art.

To each their own I suppose.

haha this was a funny thread to read through. I'm sure a lot of people doubted MJ and Madonna but now in hindsight they're both looked at as legends.

In 15 months, Lady Gaga has had Massive chart success and sold over 8 million albums. In a world full of piracy, I'm sure if there was no such thing as p2p or I tunes (35 million digital downloads btw) her album could very well outsell Appetite For Destruction for the best selling debut album.

She does write her own music, she wrote for other acts before. And yeah she's got a few bad songs, every artist on the planet has a few bad songs. It's the good stuff you got to look at, and she has a lot of that.

What a sad state pop music is in, when the only necessary criteria for having "talent", is apparently writing your own songs. Doesn't even matter what they sound like, or what the lyrics are.
Here's a concept for pop music: Let everyone write their own songs, and judge them based on quality of what's written, not just the simple fact that they've written it.

Her songs are frankly terrible to me. I love electronica, I like making electronic music. Her songs make me cringe.

All these ######ed club songs sound exactly the same too. A droning bass in minor chords, a few synth chords thrown in as highlights, and a hiphop/hispanic dark feel to them. She has some good talent, her ######ed wierdo act is pretty silly too. If she wants to be unique, how about she stop sounding like everyone else?

Her piano act on Ellen was the only one of her songs I can stand. You're right, it sounds like Queen. It's totally derivative and steals riffs straight from Bohemian Rhapsody.

Lady Gaga, Rihanna, all these current acts are awful.

Everyone doubted MJ until he died. Then people changed their minds and now he's the greatest thing to ever happen to music.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to poop on your thread, but in my mind one of the greatest mistakes people make is equating album sales to art.

Anyways, if you like her stuff that's cool but I'd put her in the same league as Backstreet Boys, Kanye West, Hannah Montana et al.

I am probably one of those old farts. I think some of her music is good. I have nothing against her. I like that she has at least made the attempt to try to do something different. Good for her on that.

I think she has hit her peak but I also think she will be around for awhile.

Please don't use the phrase 'everyone'. MJ was an awesome talent and he has always been. It is too bad he went so weird.

He was a punch line for the better part of 15 years. Now he's viewed as the best thing to ever happen to pop. Since he's dead all the fans are coming out of the closet... maybe "everyone" is a bit generalized but its amazing how its kinda cool to listen to him now whereas before noone outside of the Former Yugoslavia, Germany or Croatia would openly admit to liking him.
Michael Jackson was a fantastic entertainer with a great voice, but I wouldn't call him much of an artist. My opinion anyways.

Yeah but during the weekends he dresses up as a woman and calls himself Lady Gaga.

Technical talent is not the measuring stick for a good musician. It's very important, but it's only a part of the equation. Are Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen elite at guitar technically? Yep, but the music they make with them is not making them as famous as people with way less technical ability (hell, Coldplay's Viva La Vida was basically Satriani's If I Could Fly, but it was made more popular....similarily to how "My Sweet Lord" was miles MILES better than "He's So Fine", even though it was a rip-off)

The reason I think Lady Gaga is getting singled out here, isn't because of her over the top wardrobe. It's not very difficult to write pop music. The stuff is manufactured, and cranked out in giant numbers, designed to be danceable, and also designed to get stuck in your head. Lady Gaga, though, has fans who are typically outside of the pop-music demographic. She's certainly good at piano, and has a great voice. If she can continue to dominate the charts, while simultaneously appealing to a wider range of listeners than all of her peers, she will be the biggest thing since Madonna, MJ, etc.

Well why doesn't he just stick with that? I mean they're both equally embarrassing but at least this way he'll make more money.

Not sure why you would think the guys that play the instruments in Cannibal Corpse are not good, they are very technical and fast. Those seem like pretty good qualifications.

My point is that although I don't like top ten music, it does not mean someone else cannot. I love Cannibal Corpse. Do you think Lady Gaga could play a single Corpse song? I doubt it. Could the singer sing like Gaga? Maybe, never heard it.

That is another quality good musicians have is the ability to write something catchy. That has merit. In Lada Gaga's case though it is given such a spit shine from the label that it becomes nothing more than everything else. Meaning there is nothing there that is moving music forward. Her music is the standard de facto club dance crap that is single-handedly dumbing down the earth's populace... I have no doubt if she keeps her current pace up she be as big as Madonna, MJ, and that's says more about todays casual music listener's IQ than it does about her level of ability.

Can't believe I read in this thread that Lada Gaga is actually moving electronica forward. Really?

About time someone got popular based on talent rather than beauty. I actually find her quite attractive, but a lot of that is due to her talent. She'll be huge and i mean Madonna huge.
Man, how many people missed the point? It is fine to like lady Gaga, I was being sarcastic. Considering I like Cannibal Corpse... How can I ever expect anyone to like what is on my Ipod? However, even if you hate death metal, there is no way the band can be considered talentless, they are playing pretty hard stuff.

Not sure why you thought Lady Gaga is better than Cannibal Corpse. Based on what criteria?

They are definitely technically good at their instruments, except for maybe the vocalist. I have one big metal-head friend, and I still don't see where talent fits into the equation when it comes to heavy metal vocalists. They all sound the same to me, and I assume the ones that make it are the ones that can simply make that sound for the duration of a recording session, or live show.
